Default WHINE NOISE FROM UP FRONT??? IDEAS?

Hi Guys, I've got a impreza 94 2000 turbo wagon.
Its got a whine noise coming from the front of the car which comes in at around 30 mph. It is loudest between about 30-45mph.
Sounds like a dry bearing? initially thought it was thrust bearing as its that sort of noise but its not.
It does it in any gear and rises with the revs. But it only does it when you touch the throttle, when coasting the noise goes? It quietens down around 70, so is not that bad then, but really annoying round town at low speed!
Also noise is not there if you knock into neutral and the engine sounds lovely and crisp if you rev it?
So, any ideas, thanks.

if it does not do it in nuetral with no load and does it in any gear, then it's after the gearbox, sounds like a dif problem to me?

well i checked the gearbox oil today and it was spot on. I took it for a drive and its not as loud as i remember. Either that or its quieting down?
Could it be turbo whine, when under load or would it make the noise when revving in neutral too?
Its just the oil was low when i collected the car and if the turbo is fed from a pickup from the sump the turbo could have been running dry???
