Morning All,

I have a 2001 WRX and I was on my way into work today I noticed that there is a noise coming from the rear end when I turn the wheel to the left (either alot or a small amount). The noise actually sounds like a bearing noise but when I touch the brakes the noise stops then when I let off the pedal the noise comes again after a couple of secs/minutes. The noise also only happens when I have been driving the car for a bit and have used the brakes a bit.

I am hoping this issue is to do with a sticky brake pad or summat like that, but part of me thinks there is an issue with the Diff.

Can anyone offer any opinions or had this happen to their car?

I have a similar thing on mine and am pretty sure its a bearing gone. This is number two in 12 months! But this was a second hand hub assembly.

Mine also only happens after a while of driving and can only think its the heat soak and expansion rates making something noisier.

 

What your describing is classic brake pad drag, the pad is just lightly brushing the discs and it starts to vibrate and 'sing' the fact it goes away with the lightest touch on the pedal confirms this, you can often play tunes on it by turning the wheel one way or another with differening lateral G's making the pressure between pad and disc higher or lower. It often fixes itself, or you can rmove the rear pads, clean out the channels and the edge of the pads and refit.

Mine was defo the wheel bearing as now all gone.

 

Did you do the bearing yourself?

Synical hat on, garage charge for changing bearing while cleaning up the brakes (they have to strip out to change the bearing) at the same time....
