Thinking about changing the down pipe.

Is there ANY way this could harm the engine (alter fuelling mixture etc) or have any other detrimental effect?

I dont want to fit one if there is the slightest chance it might end in tears.

On another note, and I know this is subjective and has probably been done to death, is it Very loud? I already have a Scooby Sport back box, and would probably fit their downpipe.

I would appreciate any feedback

I've got a Magnex centre and backbox with a Falkland single-exit downpipe.

I have the chance to compare with and without downpipe as my neighbours car has the same setup without the downpipe.

My car was a little bit louder on tickover or when revving it. It does sound a whole lot deeper so will travel further!

You do here things happening under the bonnet though, which can be alarming at first!!

Being the devils advocate here: Why dont Prodrive fit a downpipe as part of their PPP if it makes such a big difference? Is this only for emissions reasons? The standard downpipe has a heatshield around it from what I can see. If a cat-less d/p generates more heat it is probably a bad thing.

That being said I miss the performance of my old car with full Scoobysport system, much better response. Dont know if I miss the noise at lower revs though, it was damn loud.

AFAIK, you have to be very lucky to pass an MOT with only the centre cat, even when very hot.

In fact, doesn't the PPP on the classic Scooby remove the centre cat as the DP cat is much bigger?

 

You can still retain your heatshield.

You can cut the sides (just a bit) and it will fit nicely on top of the downpipe. Heat generated has a tendency to move upwards and therefore you can still shield your engine bay by at least 80%.

This is what I have done. Not to mention that my heatshield is much easier to remove now as it has only 3 screws

 

I'm just waiting to put my down pipe on and have spoken to a few people regarding the down sides.

I consider more noise a down side (if it's to loud).I don't want a drowning noise on the motorway.

Dave from Jap Inovations said that If you take the front cat. off and you leave the second cat. in you will burn the second cat. out over time. This he said was due to the first cat. being a cooling cat and the second being a emission's cat.

Will let you know the difference's when I get mine fitted tomorrrow.

When I fitted a custom made 3.5 inch wide throat DP I got serious over boost problems. I guess the fitting of a DAWES mat reduced problems. Anyway I have put the standard DP back on with full HKS system.

Everyone else has told me the otherway round. The DP cat is the emissions cat and the secondry is noise and final clear up.

Also I had been running an SS DP with standard centre and have noticed no damage to the cat. Pays yo' money and takes ya choice.

I'm taking all my cat's out of my MY01 so that shouldn't be a problem !!

Stop press.... the boost was the same with the cast back on!!

Hence I have switched back to the decat..... I will get the boost checked out on a rolling road.
