Default Fitting a STI or type R gearbox to a UK turbo.

right, i am sure this has been done to death, but i think my gearbox is on its way out as it has just started to whine after heavy driving.

My car is basically standard so, if the gearbox is going its due to use rather than to much power.

if i do need to replace the gearbox, what would stop me from fitting a shorter ratio box from a type R or type RA?

would anything else need to be changed in order for it to fit?

cheers

Having driven a few boxes, I prefer the UK ratios. Might be worth trying some out first.

Yes you would also need to swap rear diff's as the Final drive ratios are different.
on a UK gearbox your front and centre diffs are 3.9 with a 1.1:1 final drive making your UK rear diff 3.545.

The Type R gear box matches up to a 4.44 rear diff. It's a bloody minefield once you get into it.

Athough the type R is quicker acclerating the UK boxes are far better spaced gearing wise.

Hmm, well i jsut thought that if i was replaceing the box it may be a good idea to go for a shorter ratio one as it will improve the acceleration?? and might change the cars characteristics for better.

Obviously i do know the ratios will be closer etcetc, but i am about to go to uni so the car will only be used as a weekend car when im back so im not too bothered if it does make it a bit less nice to drive on a day to day basis.

So once i have a type R box, i will need a type R rear diff?

Would drive/prop (i get confused) shafts etc need replacing?

and my last quesion, would it be worth it ?

thanks alot guys

prop will be fine as long as you fit R160 rear diff.
Shafts will need replacing to match the rear diff as the jdm99 typeR/RA rear diffs are R180 so you would need a version 3 box with a matching final drive.
Dont underestimate how ****ing annoying the short ratios are, sure they feel all lovely up to 60, but anything like a ton and they are revving the **** off the car and everythings buzzing and rattling, motorway cruising at 100+ is out the question as your near the redline.

good point well made
except that the other four gears will still get right on your **** and you'll end up looking to grab fifth at every single opportunity

not really, you can either run with it at 35/65 as default, or fit a simple switch straight out and have 50/50 and 35/65.
you can fit all sorts of fancy gizmos but it is circumventable

Well i'm not really looking for a stonger box as i don't really have the cash for that, nor do i need it as i only have standard power.

I may look into upgrading the engine in the future, but only to around sti power unless i come accross some serious money.

I was just looking at my options should i need to replace my gearbox.

I call bull****.

Ty754 sti boxes seem to hold up longer to more torque than early ty752 boxes and UK equivalent versions. its is alleged that the sti has a wider cut gear and there is clearly extra webbing on the casing.

just to clarify, they do hold some extra as you say, just not a huge amount more.

sure you know your self it tends to go more down to how you drive it than peak power.

shockload is the killer not the peak power so with a sti box in then roughly up to high 300's, however it can still shat itself very easily at that sort of poower.

p1/sti5/6 box seems to be the halfway house.
from experience I have used 2 different p1 boxes at about 400ftlbs each doing a shedload of full-bore drag starts, trackdays, ringtrips blah blah.
They just seem to hold out better.
as you say though, can easily shat itself in a moment.
