Since the power has been hiked on my MY95 WRX, the clutch has started slipping - its getting gradually worse and due to the imminent fitment of a Link ECU, I need to get it replaced.

I've heard that some uprated clutches are difficult in heavy traffic as they basically operate as On/Off but I don't know if this just applies to twin-plate clutches as opposed to a 'standard but uprated' clutch.

Can anyone shed any light/got any recommendations please?

 

hi mate, my clutch started slipping when i upped the power of my car. i fitted a chip/mongoose full system/pipercross induction filter. i would now estimate the power at about 240-250bhp.
i fitted an AP Organic clutch, which basically uses an uprated (still fully circular) clutch plate rather than a paddle plate.
both the clutches have the same pedal feel/weight as they use the same cover. the pedal goes slightly heavier/springier but not that bad, and is not noticable once you start driving.
i was going to fit the paddle clutch, but was warned off by many tuners who said it would make driving the car hell for every day use due to its on/off working.
the organic is bitey for the first week or so, then feels smooth like a regular OE clutch, and has not slipped once!
the power/torque rating of the clutches is rated the same by AP. 350bhp/310lb/ft max.

cheapest place to get the clutch kits is Woodford Garage Motorsport 01803 863958.
prices are £356 for organic kit, £386 for paddle kit.

*note that AP kits do not include a release bearing*
i went to a subaru dealer down the road, and got one for £91.

Yeah - dont touch the AP Ceremetallic whatever you do - a nightmare to drive!

 

Go for the AP organic sprung from woodford with release bearing( think town end garage sell them for £50). Just had one fitted, slightly stiffer than the orginal but boy does it grip. Still not use to it yet. UK legacyT is correct everybody I spoke with said steer clear of a paddle clutch.

Does fitting the AP eliminate judder?

My engine is coming out in the next few weeks and could be a good time to upgrade the clutch

U should not get judder on the AP Organic!

If it does you've got a duff clutch - similarly I got very very minor judder on my std clutch.

I get terrible judder on the Ceremattalic clutch

 

Thanks Ian - Thats the sort of info I was after.

The organic clutch sounds a lot easier to live with and will definitely cope with my 285bhp. (Mongoose full system with HKS Induction kit)

I'll give them a call. Anyone else have any recommendations?
