on a 2000 classic x reg is this fairly easy to do? just taken off my undertray to find corrosion and when i poked it gently my finger ended up inside the engine!!! rusted right through!

any idea of cost of this item? or is it worth getting it to a garage??

Well if you've already made a hole in it then presumably oil drainage is taken car of. Just undo the bolts, knock it on the side a few times with a rubber mallet and off it comes. Replace for £10-£20 second hand - try ebay or on here.

do you need a gasket or sealent how much are they new?

 

I'd use a gasket and a smear or sealent. Ring the dealer. Make sure the face are dead clean. Nowt worse than doin a job TWICE!

 

ok so easy to do yourself rather than pay a dealer or other garage

 

Not sure about the classic but on the newage it involves lifting the engine up 3 inches to get to the rear sump bolts. It is nigh on impossible to get to these without doing this and the time taken to lift the engine will be less than stuggling.

Subaru and top tuners recommend Threebond 1215 for the sealant. It is yukky stuff and be prepared to get it everywhere even if you are the cleanest person in the world

 

I have removed the sump in situ and with some thought about the tools it's not too bad. I found the old sump a 'mare top remove once all the nuts were out

getting one from dealer 67 inc vat thats before discount though.. how the f**k do you get it off once all bolts are removed??

 

how do you get the last bolt out from behind the engine its so tight a space i cant get any tool in there!!

 

Lift the engine up off the engine mounts.

Like I said above - it needs to go up. there are 2 bolts at the back that you need to undo. Getting out is just about possible but you will NEVER get them back in without cross-threading them.

 

what bolts do i undo to lift the engine a bit??

 

The two engine mount bolts underneath, the rear dogbone shaped mount and intercooler pipework if you have a fmic. You will need to strap around the inlet manifold to lift it most probably. Needs to go up about 2 inches so that you can get your hand under the back section.

 

i dont have a fmic so the rear dog shapped mount and which other? i was thinking of just jacking the engine up??

What are you going to jack it up on - the sump wont be there?

It needs to be lifted.

And exhaust headers needed to come off on mine to get the sump around the pick-up pipe. You might not need to do that on a classic I dont know.

 

good point no idea how im gonna lift it then or what with?? it looks like it will just come out if i can get the bolts undone!!!

 

Trust me, been there bought the tshirt blah blah, you will not be able to get them back in if you do manage to get them undone without lifting the engine.

 

i need help! im in serious trouble now then cuz its half off so cant drive it anywhere!!

 

It couldnt drive anywhere with a hole in the sump either but you were told about lifting the engine from the start

 

have you got a local garage...
No help now, but most will have an engine lift / support which is a bar which will sit in the wing sill's...
Offer them £10 or £20 to hire it for a few hours if there not using it, a cheque to cover replacing it may swing it, but this should lift your engine enough and make life a little easier...
Dont forget to get your cheque back when you return it...

 

might have to ask about.. this is a nightmare if i knew it was this difficult i would not have bothered.. i would have just got it to a garage!

 

It aint a nightmare, just follow it how Duncan (dynamix) said and you'll be fine.

I've done several in situ (used my engine hoist) and its about 1 hour tops, start to finish

Ditto above, i did mine about 3 weeks ago, it has to be lifted but it very simple job to do once the engine is raised.

 

I got mine back on without lifting the engine See my project thread...

 

You must have freakishly long skinny triple jointed fingers then Floyd I am scared to look at the thread now for fear of being put off my breakfast

 

1/4 drive sockets are your friend, but lifting the engine does make it miles easier

 

I changed mine with Steven's helpful bullet point guide and a handy 1/4 socket set
