Well, I've just started using Castrol driveline 75w90, still got bit of crunch in 5th - that might be because oil change wasn't 100% (couldn't get bottom drain plug off).

Would Redline Shock Proof be any better as I've heard although its fully synth, it will work well in 6 speeds and stop crunch also....

Which is best, know which is more expensive.

 

mine was doing this last year,tried the redline stuff,just made it worse and its horrible to select the gears on cold morning. best thing to do is dont drive it so hard it crunches till you can get the syncro replaced (get them all changed while its out) .dont do what i done and leave it a year and cause more damage .

Oh craps, not sure how long its been crunchy, 2nd hand box see.

How much did that set you back? I'm sure some damage has already been done but I've heard some oils can cure it.

 

I've used the shockproof oil in GTR 'boxes and it's been superb but can cause problems in other type 'boxes. Redline also do a lightweight version so that may be worth a go? Failing that i've got a low mile'96 WRX i'm breaking if you need a genuinely good 'box

Cheers, I''ll avoid redline then and try one more flush with castrol - I've got gut feeling the 6 speed was already damaged and needs proper TLC trouble is already spent a shed load getting it on the road and partly finishing what I thought was last lot of projects...seems I have another, well, wont be this year!

 

mine started crunching at 7k from 4th to 5th then after a while it just got worse and just before i had it fixed it was about 5 1/2 k .it only done it on fast gear changes .i found if u held bk a split second it was ok. try the oil but castrol driveline is more than up to the job, to makes things worse i have been told by api and zen that this is a common problem.

 

even fixed i dont like the feel off the 6 speed box anyway, (cannot beat the feel of an old worn ford gearbox lol lol)

 

Dont say a fixed box isn't that "fixed", if I'm going to be spending on her hope get it properly fixed so my fast pulling away doesn't keep getting messed up by crunchy selections..takes fun out of it when showing off to your mates.

i use the redline lightweight shock proof oil and it is very good stuff.

They got the "click" slightly wrong, other than that, real solid box (once fixed) as takes all sorts of torque levels.

 

Hmm, just to add - wonder if this is best for a "repaired" 6 speed?

 

Redline Heavy Shockproof I use in my 752 5-speed. Spot on and much better than the MIllers stuff I used before.

Don't know about Subaru's, but my mates GTR came with a horridly crunchy 3rd gear (and good discount on that basis), used the Royal Purple trans fluid, just sold it three years and 40kmiles later with no crunch at all (and no remedial work to the box either!).....

What the hek is royal purple trans fluid? Is that fully synth or semi or like an oil for "used" gearboxes?

 

Since I got it at 27000 miles my MY00 has always been notchy into 5th when thrashed and I never select 1st unless I'm stationary because it's just too stressful. It was running synthetic Shell Helix but I changed to Redline 75W90NS and it is definitely improved (still there though) and now at 75000 miles without self-destructing. Seems everybody mentions the Shockproof when talking about Redline, but when I read the descriptions/uses on the Redline website the Shockproof didn't seem the appropriate choice.

Some time ago I was in contact with Redline and they said their HD Shock Proof was intended for straight cut dog boxes and not helical synchro which most people run.
It is important to check with the oil manufacturers technical department as to their best product for your application. A major consideration will be what LSD you are running because the oil in plated diff has to perform differently to a viscuos diff. What is good for one application could actually be detrimental to an other.

 

save your money and keep the castrol driveline, no oil will fix a worn syncro mate trust me i have been down this route and ended up paying more out as i done more damage by leaving it 14 months and forcing it into 5th(had a 5th gear set put in plus syncros) . drive it sensible and save up to get the syncros replaced there only somethin like 25 quid each plus labour lol lol

 

and once fixed put the drive line in,its the best oil u can use in the 6 speed box

I'll def have to get her repaired but will be early next year as skint...to not be able to blast though, not good as got remap in July - she'll have damage bit more.

Note of interest, I'd been in talks before with oil manufacturer for their fully synth 75w90 and they said its fine for Scoob boxes but others have since confirmed changed from that oil to driveline fixed the problem. Already trying oil change on box so will complete that now (just need 1 more litre to fill up) so might be wasting that oil but its worth a try.

 

When i upped the power in my Ra i started to get a whine everytime i gave it a good drive, so i decided to change to Redline shockproof and it hasnt made a noise since and that was two years ago

 

Mine does have a whine, has from the day I bought the box...
I'll stick with Castrol for now though and see what box is like and next run (remap with Bob R I expect, cant wait).

 

Swepco 201 80/90 is brilliant in Porsche transaxles, smoothing and quietening. Whether itll be suitable for an Imprezas combined transmission I cant say...

 

have try using redline and royal purple stuff all are not bad. Been using redline heavy duty shock proof gear oil on my sti V3 without a problem. The only thing i notice is when its cold then its a bit difficult to shift but when the vehicle is running on high speed/high heat its superb!

 

where do you buy all these fancy oils
