Default Which clutch for 450+?

Hi all, just wondering which clutch to go for?

I'm building a 2.33 or 2.5 (haven't quite decided yet) with a PPG 5speed or a 6 speed ( actually haven't quite decided that either ) which is going to be around 450/450. But I want a clutch that will handle more for future tweaks .

I was thinking about an EXEDY HYPER TWIN PLATE CLUTCH or CUSCO TWIN METAL PLATE CLUTCH

comments and opinions would be appreicated

Thanks
Chris

I have a HKS twin plate, supplied and fitted by API, I have chewed through quite a few clutches in my time, but this thing has not slipped once. Cant rate it enough.

Running 380ish at the mo, but has been running over 400 with no probs, within the next couple of weeks it will be 440 and I expect no problems.

This is with a 5 speed PPG straight cut box. (API again)

We offer one that will handle that power whilst still retaining good road manners. Very well priced too

PM for further info.

Thanks for you input and I am interested in the price of the clutch's, but I was looking for comments on driveability with these clutch's and peoples experience with their clutch.

From memory as mine was done as part of a package, mine was part worn, and set me back £500.

Drivability, takes some getting used to, if your not carefull it will stall or smash your teeth out.

After a few hours of driving it just feels like normal.

The ones we do result in firmer pedal but retain nice road manners.

Not on/off like paddle clutches and not rattly/jerky like twin plates.

PM for further info.

Cheers,

Bob

my exedy twin was a b1tch at first but i soon got used to it.

i do have a 'daily' though so the scoob only comes out 9 or 10 times a year.

i did stall it lots in the beginning but not now, just got to remember to rev the bugger, worse bit is reversing into my garage, up a steep hill and a very tight garage . if i don't get it right first time then it gives a biting feel even when fully down.

If I had the cash to put a twin plate in it would be Exedy hyper twin is the safe bet as its pretty future proof and I have been told by people they drive pretty good with them fitted

When fully bedded in (which can take months) the Exedy twin plate is nicer to drive than an uprated organic in my experience. With the exedy the rattle only occurs when you've depressed the clutch, all but dissapears after about 3 months of use, I'm not sure why, but they definitely get quieter. Other brands are noisier in my experience, OS Giken being the noisest (but still acceptable)
Any uprated organic will still have trouble with repeated drag use, and if you're buying a new flywheel too, the price differential, especially on a 6 speed, makes the twin plate an attractive option. If you do want to do regular drag racing with 500+hp don't go with the organic, in the long term it will cost you more. If you only do road and trackday with no launching then you may have luck with an uprated organic, I've not found a clutch that does what you hope for a 5spd platform. The 6spd clutches fair better due to increased size.

If you want to only do it once, then the exedy cerametallic twinplate is the proven choice.

Yup I have paid out for an ACT clutch and flywheel only to have to pull them out for a twin plate clutch. If I had of put the twin plate in the car in the 1st place it would of only been a few more hundred pounds at the time

Jd5217 I have an exedy twinplate with flywheel combo sitting in my garage waiting to be fitted in the next couple of weeks Paul it was intesting reading what you had to say about them I could live with the noise and good to know that rattle goes after a while.Steve knowing you you must have tested every bit of kit that you could possibly buy for an impreza by now see you at the NBO.

All very true I'd say...I'm currently running 482/493 on 6 speed AP racing organic and she's not slipped one - done couple of quick starts to but lots of smell, mostly tyres though, not clutch. I dont go mad usually though, prefer to pull away, then give it gas - time isn't an issue running these figures. I'd just recommend you go for clutch that dont judder (or slip lol), then its your choice of how it bites - AP organic is nice and will get you in garage without flying out the other end through the wall.

I have the exedy twin plate, been in quite a few months now. My car is an everyday road car driven many by the mrs. It easier to stall, has some slight judder if your being very gental when letting it off at low revs and mine still rattles away when depressed. The mrs gets on ok with it as well but its deffinatly alot worse than the standard single plate. I think it would get anoying if you did alot of city driving everyday.

But now for the good part, absolutly ZERO clutch slip, that is passed on to the tyres

I also had good fun watching my builder try and move the car out of the way of the delivery lorry the other day, he must have stalled it 5 times trying to move it 10 yards (being a jap import and having to have clutch depressed to start it added to the amusement) before he gave up and made me move it.

Exedy should come with a health warning - I'm sorry to offend anyone but why should you have to drive with a clutch that is **** for the first few months while you bed the thing in, in the meantime probably damaging something else on the car (I have one at the moment - recently fitted and am totally ******* pissed at the garage for fitting this crap)

These really are crap..............

I'm going back to AP Organic - it coped with over 450bhp (I dont do drag strips - just track days), at least with these you dont get incredible judder........

Exedy to me is the equivalent of a shoddy building job - cowboy clutches...........

AVOID

Its a Subaru outfit that only do Exedy's so you'd hope that this was second nature............
I only here bad stuff about these clutches..... ok then,..........if its good after a few months (as many posts say) and confirmed to me separately by a few people. Dont see why you have to bed in a clutch..........

Exedy Organic is ultimately a mild ceremetallic clutch - I know as I had an AP one several years ago that was just a joke - I had to ditch the plate

Those, like me who only drive a couple of thousand miles a year back and forth to track days dont have the time to 'bed-in' clutches

These really should come with a health warning and frankly I would advise anyone with, any sort of power against them

Twin plate Exedy also costs a bloody fortune!

Ive got the SPEC clutch in mine. Think its rated to 530 or 570lbsft ( i think stage 3).

Power on mine is 440bhp and 470lbsft.

Car runs nice.

I got their lightened flywheel as well

Cant remember what it cost but was deffo under 1k.

Had clutch in there for yonks and hasnt given up on me yet

I have a Cusco Twin Plate, which I believe is the same as an Exedy. Have not had one problem with it running well over 500 of each. I have done countless full bore standing starts and track events and the clutch is as good as it was, when it first went in. Done nearly 8k miles now. Clutch was rattly when it first went in, but that soon stopped.

Question

Does anyone have any experience of the carbon exedy twin-plate rather than the cera-mettalic type which exedy openly state inherently suffer more from judder at low revs?

Looking to push close to 500 of each soon and would appreciate any feedback with regards to what I need to do to upgrade my gearbox as well!!

Dave.

Kev Horsley uses a exedy twin plate on his scoobyclinic time attack car running 510bhp no problems and 4 out of 4 wins, i use same clutch on my scoob and it drives nice on road and not as jerky as some uprated clutches
