I think my VF28 might be on the way out (slightly smokey on tickover) so my question is, what would be a good substitute for it as I fancied a change anyway.
I'm looking for around 350bhp.

go for a 16g or a vf34 , and a tweek on the map , go back to the original mapper and he should only be charging you around 150 quid.

but

when i was running 345/340 on my old vf34 the gearbox started whining in 3rd , car had done 54000 miles on a Y reg (classic)
changed a bit since then


IMHO your best sticking around the 320-330 bhp area unless you can afford PPG or 6-speed .
look at the TD04 hybrid from Andy F

 

my gearbox started whining at 260bhp, o hang on thats cos i blew it up and had a straight cut box put in lol

best bet would be a vf34 or vf35

 

Does it smoke on tickover even when fully warmed..?

 

A little, but I dont know if thats due to it being so cold here the past few day.

 

Does it smoke when giving it some beans and hitting peak boost..?

Also, what colour is the smoke..?

 

Dunno mate, its 320bhp so I'm usually looking straight ahead with both hands firmly on the stearing wheel

 

try 470 / 505

 

try a vf35 quick spool up and good for 350bhp. am well happy with mine
