Just wondering what would have the edge my mate has got a 335d and mate dose that thing shift,have any of you had a play,drive with one of them would they be just as quick to say 100 as a wrx ppp?

 

There wouldnt be much in it. But from a standing start the 335d is very quick, urs would have the edge though, just.

 

It would slaughter you in gear, they have phenominal torque and power delivery, plus aint they 260+bhp? think it may actually put you to shame.
Just checked out the bhp, 272bhp and just over 400lbs of torque in a 1500kg car, so you have about 120kg advantage, it probably goes quicker though the midrange, my money will still be on the diesel though!

The spec c would have it then plus the gearing is better on a spec c than on a wrx (and theres more torque )
Still these new diesels give you performance and 40mpg, a bit scary as you can remap em for 300+bhp quite easily with really silly torque

Just had my 535 d sport mapped , Its now 300/600 , Its very fast for a diesel.

 

What I've never got my head around is whether a, say, 350bhp Scoob (a lot of Scoobs are this now with some simple mods) which peaks at 7k revs ish can/should beat a nutter diesel that has, say, 400ft torque much lower down the rev range hurts my head just wondering!

Yes the scoob is sold, Its on its way to Cyprus Ive had scoobs for 10 years, had the 13th fastest scoob at sso last year , So Ive been there done that now. My 535 d sport is so different to the scoob I can not compair them at all , the bmw is so nice to drive pure class and fast , its not bad on the b roads, Ive had fun allready following a (slow) evo today he just could not lose me on the twisties But my scoob (X) would lose me big style >> most well sorted scoobs will beat my bm , If its driven right My old scoob £16K >> my bmw £25K I like the £25K best (for now)

Loads of people don't get this ... keep thinking I should write an article about it ...

Torque is what makes the car accelerate at any point. Diesels have very high peak torque figures put also a very sharp peak; there is very little torque either side of the peak to speak of. Turbo-charged cars tend to have very flat torque curves with most of the torque available right from spool up to max revs (2000-8000 in the spec C).

Run a spec C up against a 335d (something I may have done one or twice) and the beemer will have the edge between 1500 and 2000 revs ... even pulling half a car bonnet ahead. But then the torque drops off rapidly and the gearing is so long that changing up is pointless ... the acceleration bleeds away just as the C is getting into its stride. The 335 changes up around 3500 revs while the C charges on to 8000 pulling about a one and a half car lengths ahead before you have to change up.

BMWs diesel technology is coming on leaps and bounds. It won't be long before the Germans are producing diesels that absolutely hammer NA engines of the same capacity.
