330bhp Impreza, What Clutch?

Default 330bhp Impreza, What Clutch?

Hi all,

Had a little blat last night and the ole clutch started to slip. Went for a little run today and the clucth was slipping all the more.

So need to change it sonner rather than later. Which is a shame, cause I was planning to do it later on in the year anyway as I'm taking the Impreza to 380bhp.

I've phoned a few people, and to be honest I've been baffled. I've never had to buy a clutch before all my old cars had decent clutches fitted whe I bought them.

Do I need an organic clutch, paddle clutch, fast road oversized and so on... I really have no idea.

My impreza is a sparingly used daily drive, and goes on longer trips and trips to and from the shops. I've got no plans top take it on the track, but I do have a little blat on the country roads near me.

So I don't want anything too heavy, but equally don't want anything that will require changing in 1 months time.

Any ideas? And can anyone explan the differences in the clutch types?

IMHO:
For your use have an Exedy package off David at Welcome to the API website
This is a simple OEM weight uprated clutch that bolts straight on . The driven plate is lined with an organic based material much like stock ones are. This will work.

The next steps up are 'paddle' driven plates which are not suitable for road/traffic, and can wear alarmingly when slipped in traffic.

The plate has 4 or 6 'paddles', These are areas of the clutch about 50mm x 20mm lined with a metalic pad. They bite with one hell of a grip when the clutch is dropped at 6000 rpm ...

Next up is the twin plate organic or paddle and these are about £1100, noisey, and for very high torque engines.

Simply discuss it all with David and he will set you right.

Organic clutch all the way, best combination for traffic and power and HARD BITE at 6000rpm when needed.. And the pedal feels much better than before.

David from API is a pro, so if you need more info he's the best bloke to ask as quoted by 911 in prev post.

i would go for the AP over the uprated exedy, the exedy can be a pig when its new and some suffer from bad juddering for up to 5/10k miles.

you don't get this with the AP but is a bit more money, worth it though as the juddering can spoil the enjoyment of the car.

I've got API's uprated Exedy clutch on my car (not quite 330bhp). Has done me proud for the last 30,000 miles or so. No problems at all, and no slipping.

Exedy.

Uprated kits use a 230mm plate.

OE Spec kits have a choice of 225 and 230mm.

I had one of API's Exedy kits along with a lightened flywheel at the same time. I would recommend this to anyone running 300-350bhp. It is lighter and nicer to drive than the AP clutch (and cheaper) I had on there before and copes effortlessly with any amount of abuse that I've dished out so far. My wife even comments on how easy it is to drive now.

question to jiff: how long did you run the standard clutch on 330bhp before it started to slip?

reason I ask is because I am in the process of upgrading my WRX to 300bhp, (just waiting on a remap now in a few weeks time) and have just been offered a turbo and injectors at a very good price, which with a good map should be somewhere in the region of 330/340bhp, however I havn't budgeted for a new clutch, so will the OE run ok with limited abuse (ie the occosaional hard launch) ...........

It held up for about 6-7 months, but I don't know how old the clutch is or what type it is. It may alreayd be an uprated version. A few people I spoke to are surprised its last as lon as it has, especially with my driving

What type of excedy would you guys recommend, I've justhad a look at they webpage and they like 6 different versions.

I've got a standard 230mm clutch in mine, been in over a year. Not done loads of miles, but has done plenty emergency starts and no sign of any slipping.
