Rocker cover gaskets
Anyone ever had to have their rocker cover gaskets replaced?
I have a 96 UK turbo that needs doing and i have been quoted around the £200 mark
by the garage i use for servicing etc.Surly this cant be right, £200 for 2 gaskets ?
depending on the quoting garages hourly labour rate, 200 quid isn't that bad, assuming it includes the parts, labour and vat. The job is likely to be fairly labour intensive as access to both cylinder heads will require removal of certain engine bay "furniture".
(section about valvetrain removed as it's a my96 we're talking about)

There was a recent post in one of the forums about this. I however cant find it(damn search). From what I can remember they said its an easy DIY job? Basically you need silicone sealent(I would prefer a new gasket) and bolt seals. Take it off, seal with silicone, put back and tighten bolt seals to 5lbft. Bobs your uncle. They didnt mention anything about taking other bits off. This is only what I read, I havent done the work.

the thread b5m is on about is here

The common problem seems to be that the drivers side needs doing rather than both sides. If you are getting the garage to do the work, I would question this.
cheers,
Dave

Thanks for the info chaps, i am not prepared to risk making a ***** of the job so i am taking it in later this week to be done, apparently the drivers side is worse but they both need doing
Now wheres my rubber cheque book.

Editted to say that with a new gasket and bolt caps, not loads of splodge (technical term) as recommended by some.

At last the parts have arrived, well most of them. I took it in this morning and they have all the gaskets except the driver’s side which of course is the one leaking most
they reckon it will be another 2 weeks before the other arrives its on back order from Japan
.
Anyway they are doing one today, will be interesting to see how much one side costs.
Pete,
£60+vat a side, parts and labour.
Was that £60 per side + VAT including parts and labour?
Cheers
