does anyone know the legal limit? or anywhere in or near essex where i can get a check?

 

Not sure of the limit - depends if it is a static reading or drive-by, revs, throttle opening etc Someone in the motor industry must know as production cars must comply. Having said all that if you need a check I have a dB meter if you are anywhere near me.

I was told that noise level is not checked for MOT's, just emissions.
So if it's the MOT you are after you should be ok.
For example, my car has a fairly loud open pipe (a bit illegal ocifer) with no CATs. My garage just puts a cat back in for the MOT then takes it straight back out again (for £40).

thanx! its not for my scooby but my dads c-type jag,the straight through exhausts might be too loud for a track day at goodwood,he doesnt want to get turned away and loose his money! as if its too loud he will take his e-type!

I think the max for SVA (imports/Kit cars etc.) is 101 db, but I don't know if there is a limit for an MOT

Call the track itself as different tracks have different noise levels......I know that from my bike days !

 

Think its something like 108db @ 4k revs. At least I hope it is as mine runs about 104db

At 104dBA you are less than half the 108 limit (+3dBA doubles the value) C type - Magic!

The noise limit at Goodwood depends on what sort of day is being run.

For a Road Traffic day the limits are

Static: 98db, Drive by: 96db

for a Goodwood day:

Static: 105db, Drive by: 101db.

Static is measured by the marshals using a noise meter at 45degrees to the exhaust, 1metre away while the car is at 3/4 max revs. They are 'lenient' with the static readings, but the drive by is strictly enforced as the local council have microphones around the circuit that they monitor from the council offices.

Out of interest does anyone have noise figures for their cars? My scooby registered 88db static, 82 drive by, on the original system.

"Revival" is about the only meet a standard C Type will be able to run at Goodwood. The local authority are very strict.

No problem with landing 140dB of Harrier on the airfield in the middle of the circuit though

Over the years, I have seen the jobs that Hayward & Scott have had to do to such classics, just to appease the local council at Goodwood and Castle Combe etc.

It is sacrilege.

 

What's a full scoobysport weigh in at noise wise (my00 and previous)?

 

I got 93dB static at Castle Combe IIRC, full Scoobymania exhaust. Bit weedy I thought

weve run a track day at goodwood for the last two years, the limit has been 98 db, with ten cars on the track at a time, if we had run less cars it would have been 101 db

my p1 was dead on 98 db at 5000 rpm with a full scoobysport exhaust, i got pulled after the first session for being too noisy passing the sound meters and the marshall said to back off passing the meters, worked ok
