The best oil for the Scoob gearbox is Castrol Syntrax 75w/90, but unless you`ve got treacle in there you should not have problems in engaging 1st as long as you`re not moving. If you are having trouble with 1st at a standstill perhaps you need to check that the clutch is fully disengaging, or maybe a 1st gear synchro. problem.

Indeed i am aware of the 4mentioned forum but since i aint had no responses on that this was clearly a cunning plan
So wood this synchromesh malarky only take place when the engine is cold then thats all that made me think a fluid might help?

I jsut changed my gear box oil to redline hi shock. It is without doubt the best thing I have done to the car in ages. It isnt cheap, but it feels incredible all the time.
The heaviest stuff they have is capable of withstanding my extra torque but they also do it in two lighter weights, the lower of the two being that advised as standard.
the stuff is supposed to give the protection it is rated for but even the ehaviest stuff is supposed to be less viscous than standard scooby stuff.
So all the pros and the only con is price.
Available from demon tweeks.

I had the exact same problem few days ago.
I changed the GearBox oil to 80W90 - and since then, the problems began :-( especially shirting when cold (to 1st and 2nd gear).
I searched for another oil and finally i found Gear-Box Oil which is recommanded by the DEALER for all subaru's in my country (Israel) - its a 80W oil, especially thin for Japanise Gear-Boxes. (This oil made by company called "PAZ LUBES" a great known company in my country which make oil's for all automotive industries)
I changed the Oil again to the dealer's recommandation (from the "old" 80W90 to the new 80W) and all the problems were GONE !!
I recommand you to search for a thinner oil, at least 75W80... a 75W90 will be great.
Be happy and dont worry about it, Your gear problem is about to be solved.
Have Fun
