Default Gearbox whine on overrun

A couple of weeks ago my sister took her classic wrx up to Santa Pod. The car only did 3 runs but now the gearbox is making a whining noise on overrun I noticed a very slight whine on the 2nd run and thought nothing of it but it is still doing it

My thoughts were that it was low on oil so she got that checked and it was fine What else would cause a gearbox to whine on overrun like that and why did it happen? The car has only been running roughly 280bhp on a ScottT chip for less than 6 months and it hasn't been abused I'm confused.

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Thanks

Without listening to it I cannot be sure but it is more likely that the noise is coming from your rear diff.
If it is the diff, it is possible to check and adjust the backlash which will most likely resolve the problem for now.
Let someone who knows what they are doing listen to the noise and if the diff needs adjustment it is less than an hours work. Retain the oil and inspect it for debris. A small amount is not unusual and will be picked up on a magnetic drain plug.

Hi Harvey,

Someone from a local Subaru specialist has driven the car and said it's the gearbox but I haven't actually had time to go and drive it myself yet. If it is the rear diff that would be much better. Apparently the noise goes away when coasting if you dip the clutch if that helps.

Thanks,

Paul

someone from subaru told me my tappets were making the ticking noise and it would be ok,obviously they dont know the difference between noisy tappets and a blown piston/broken ringland

Is this in all gears or just a particular gear, does it change pitch with speed? If all gears it could be the final drive rather than a problem with a particular gear.

May also be worth changing the oil if it's been in there a while.

Having now driven the car I can give my own opinion

It is speed related but not road speed If you coast you hear what sounds like a gearbox whine but knock the car into neutral and rev the engine and it is the engine that is whining I opened the bonnet and it sounds like it is whining from the rear of the engine

Could that be clutch? The noise doesn't appear to change if you depress the clutch.

Thanks

My old box did the same after a few runs.

You will have chipped a tooth or "pulled" the teeth in that particular gear.

Mine was really noisey in 1st but all other where silent as anything and it drove fine no issues with any syncro's.

Oil change made no difference to mine.

It could last a while or die anytime it depends on your luck i guess.......

Same thing happended to my 5MT. It developed a whining sound on overrun, a few months later it let go with the most spectacular *CRUNCH* I've ever heard from a car - a quarrying machinery springs to mind. Couldn't even turn the wheels

Thumbs down My myo5 gdb sti prodrive has a whine

Hi sorry to barge in on your posts, what it is, is that my myo5 sti prodrive has a whine when you come done the gears particulary in first, I don't mean to sound incompetent, but was is over run?. Is that when you dip the clutch before you stall when coming to a stop in first or second gear. I get a whine like a whine when reversing. Is that the rear diff? It also started when my original startermotor was on it's way out as I just replaced starter last fri night , car seemed great but after a few days this whine has come back and also sounds kinda funny when starting her?. It also feels like no boost once she has had perfect stick from 2-4 gear maybe 3 times, no grinds no over revs. Could this be an electrical fault or the diff at the rear not engaging as when there's weight in the back it seems dead.. Iam totaly lost what to do next as I plugged in my obd computer and there's no faults what so ever??? I'm considering feed a cold air feed to the turbo unit as it seems like a place to start cause I've changed all oils at the same time have done this twice in the last 4 months and it's all Millers competition stuff??. Soz for barging in it seems like you guys have the same problem as me but I don't track or drag race my car.. Petrol is to expensive!!

Default box noise

having gone through 4 boxes in 4 years sounds like the overrun death rattle, mine have all died a few thousand miles later when this whine starts. mixture of ty52 and 54 boxes,
considering how small the gears are inside the box i think they last quite well.
not worth losing sleep over just budget for a replacement soonish.

Mine does this on overun and I was told most likely spigot bearing. Not to worry about it till clutch goes. £10 bearing but means gearbox off to get to it.
