Hi,

I'm not sure if you are familiar with the ring road in Coventry but apparently the police where trying new technology there today.

They had a van which did real-time OCR of number plates as cars drove past. This number plate was then checked against a database and the police where told if the car was stolen or not. Oh, there was also 4 police bikes waiting for action!

Sound plausable?

Hi Matt

I don't no if it is connected in any way but yesterday I was travelling along the A45 between Coventry & Stonebridge island and there were police cars parked on the two bridges on the top of the hill followed by two bikes parked in the lay-by before the Meriden turn.

Neil.

Very plausible. The system has been around for quite a while. Its called Automatic NumberPlate Recognition (ANPR)

There are installations on the M25, down at the Port of Dover and on the Severn Tunnel to name just three. The system is also fitted to all new SPECS installations.

The VRM is checked against the DVLA database and the PNC and anything of 'interest' is checked.

Mattski,

this "van" wouldn't be white would it?

Within the last hour i was travelling down the M6 Southbound approaching Junction 7 (Great Barr). On a widened section of the hard shoulder, just before the M5 on-slip joining the M6 a white transit-sized van was parked.

It had two rear doors with a window in the upper section of each, and very dark tinted glass. However these windows seemed to be "open", and pivoted upwards - and there appeared to be some kind of "equipment" inside.

I can't say for sure, as it was barely visible, but there were (at least) two things that looked like video camera lenses. I didn't get any laser or radar warnings on my detector, so it could well have been some kind of OCR camera.

Luckily all of the outside lane traffic was doing 70mph or so - mainly due to the Centre Lane Owners Club (i.e. deserted lane 1).

This is big brother stuff in a very real and scarey sense

But surely anyone who's just reported their baby stolen would be glad to hear that the nice gentlemen (and ladies) of the law have just safely picked it up, complete with a carfull of thieves that are available for personal interview (facing up to the crime and all that)?

rob, I would be very glad if the car was caught if it got nicked.

As for the van being white, it does sound familiar.

I heard that there is some sort of 'ring of steel' around london. Apparently when that rocket was fired at the MI6? building they used it to try and spot cars from ireland and stuff.
