Default Have I diagnosed this right ?

Alright everyone.
Got a 1999 uk turbo impreza saloon.
Problems I have.
1/ slight but noticeable whining
2/ knocking when turning anything over half lock.
3/ rear diff oil is black
4/ seems to stop by its self and doesnt roll on slight hills
These are the symptoms I have with my car I purchased the car a week ago
I am suspecting rear diff or possibly centre, Could anyone shed any light on this if you have had similar problems.
Am I on the right track.
Cheers in advance for any help
Carl

No 1 Could be tyre type, my MY99 UK turbo came with Avon ZZ1's on which are rock hard and made a noise on the road like a failing wheel bearing. ONly found that out after replacing both rear bearings!

No 2 Knocking on lock if coming from the front wheels is normally CV joints.
Check for split boots, normally thats what happens, they loose all their grease then fail making a knocking noise.

No 3 Never been inside my rear diff so cant comment on oil colour, but they can be slightly noisey.

No4 Mine dosen't roll on hills like a FWD car, can only assume its a 4wd thing all the extra drive train to turn means it dosent roll as freely.

Hope that helps

Dan.

Yeah thanks for that.
The knocking doesnt seem to come from the front its almost like its underneath the seat. Cv joints are all ok. will take it in and see what an expert thinks It is quite bad knocking and shakes the car.
Cheers for your help I will let you know when I find out.

Certainly, unless the last owner put Molyslip in the rear diff., the oil should be quite clean. There has to be an issue in there somewhere!

Sounds like it's winding up the drivetrain due to different ratio diffs front and rear. Most likley fitted with JDM gearbox and UK rear diff. If it has, then centre diff will eventually sieze up.
