exhaust manifolds ported
Hi,
Looking at getting my exhaust manifolds ported, when my car goes in for some
work, only problem is the wife thinks getting this porting work done is a
waste.
Anyway has anyone one here had their exhaust manifolds ported ??
Did you think it was worth it ??
Would you recommend getting it done ??
What sort of BHP did it release ??
I know fitting a Cat Free Down pipe is a big help to the car, is this like
doing that again or not as much ??
Does it increase the noise level ??
Does it loose the distinctive Scooby sound ??
The Car is a 1993 WRX if that make any difference.
Cheers
Stuart.

From: Leeds - It was 562.4bhp@28psi on Optimax, How much closer to 600 with race fuel and a bigger turbo?
I wouldnt mind knowing my self... As I have a die grinder and thought about trying... (I know its not as easy as that but...)

Difficult to say as to the increase, as I had a complete engine rebuild done at the same time. It does however sound very crisp now (still the same offbeat sound) and certainly breathes very well, but can't give any figures I'm afraid. I did look at the ports/gasket/manifold before it was done, and there is definately a lip to be removed, and that must help. I didn't have the turbo end done, but apparently this makes a difference as well.

I did mine myself and found it straightforward. The car certainly pulls better in mid range and is more responsive. If you look back some months in Drivetrain you'll find a thread where Sam Elassar posted photos of his before and after porting along with a number of comments. I'd certainly do it again

Ooppss - Sorry Andy
BTW - what's happening with your car? Did you sell the mods or did you keep them? Still got the car I hope?
Coming to the PE RR Day on the 19th?
Matt
P.S. I might even display my new and improved "Tuned" (super sad
) jumper

does anybody have the pictures that could possibly post them...
I believe it was Bob that said he had the pictures

David its a very easy job and only took me an evening. If you look under the car you will see how to remove the manifold - once you look at the inlets you can see where you need to remove material from - its really obvious. Don't be tempted to match the head tracts - they need to be of a narrower diameter than the manifold. Only difficult thing is the up pipe connection with the turbo - I left that until recently when replacing the turbo.
I am not a mechanical expert by any means, its very very easy - have a go yourself.

Yes, sorry did no have before and after, but on MY97, 97RON, Standard ECU ( 0.9 bar max ), with ITG, Ported STD Manifold ( Peter Croney ), SS DP and Backbox got 243 BHP and 218 LBS / FT on PEng rollers
DP big help in terms or response, and lack of asthmatic feeling on STD UK over c. 5000 rpm, not sure of big power gain though
Does not increase noise, sound is more mellow on part throttle
Still sounds like a Scooby :-)

Can I have the pictures too david@wallis2000.co.uk
Are you saying that you just smoothed out to where the gasket fits.. or where the black marks where?? What did you use? a die grinder??

I have just put mrt headers on my car, and the difference required for the fuelling is incredible, seems to have required incresing everywhere, and no decrease anywhere, which is a good thing, all pros and no cons.
If you are taking out a cat and fitting a new manifold and downpipe at teh same time, I would expect the difference to be remarkable, aI would certainly not want to do it on standard engine management system. Get yourself a lambda link or similar asap, and note the fuelling when on boost first. After fitting make sure it is at least middle green when on boost or you risk running lean meaning high exhuasut gas temperatures, and greater likelihood of det, both of which are bad things!

Adam,
You probably have a Link ECU?
Because the Link is using the MAP value for fueling, the mixture becomes to lean when more air is going into the engine at the same boost pressure and revs. This is defenetly the case with a "better" manifold.
I fitted a P.E. manifold to my car and had to make the mixture leaner (!) all over the rev range. This on a car with Unichip and std. ECU and using the MAF for fueling. (and VF23, 3" exhaust, ....)
You can not speak in general the mixture has to be made richer or leaner, it depends totaly on the setup of the ECU.
Check out the mixture before the modification and after it, then you know what to do.

This is strange to me cause every exhaust mod requires more fuelling in order to protect your engine. And what are your air/fuel ratios before and after the P.E. manifold?
