i was wondering has anyone had a cambelt snap on a scooby.Ive never actually heard of anyone having a cambelt failure

 

A friend of mine had his water pump sieze up which caused the belt to almost fail, it jumped a couple of teeth but luckilly he didnt suffer any valve damage!

 

i had one,air con tensioner broke (so i was told),shattered the cam pulley tore the belt in 2,after a few turns realised something was seriously wrong but again repleced the belt and pulley and away it went no problems that was over a year ago.

 

A/C tensioner? The A/C runs off an accessory belt in front of the cambelt cover..

 

I was told by a Subaru specialist that they're NOT generally regarded as 'snappers'. However, obviously not worth taking a risk with them (in any car!)

I had my 90k'er (cambelt) done at Zen about 6 weeks ago and, (assuming it was previously replaced at the scheduled 45k), the old one was in remarkably good condition - no signs of serious glazing, cracking, etc. (was nice to know that I wasn't on borrowed time!). Indeed, it was the air-con and alternator belts that were past it - rather them than the cambelt, eh?

GOLDEN RULE: If you have no verifiable history of when it was last changed get it done ASAP!!!... Is circa £150-200 really worth the ball-ache of a new head/head rebuild (at minimum!), and all that it entails?! I dont think so .

 

...Oh for a dedicated camshaft-only timing chain ...

 

i know it took out the centre plastic cover and got dragged into the pulley,i have a pic of the damage somewhere ill have a look for it.

 

I think it helps that its a relatively low C/R engine.. I'm also a big vauxhal fan and the ECOTec lumps are renound for snapping belts..

 

Bad luck would be an understatement

 

3 weeks ago my cambelt tensioner on my 22k 05 wrx failed on start up, it has snapped 1 valve, bent 3 others and wrecked the piston & valve seat, about £2100 worth of work , i would be interested to hear from others who have experienced such a failure.

 

Tensioner and idler seem to be far more common than belt failure.
