Default Mapping existing ECU / Apexi ECU

Could someone please tell me the difference (other than the cost) between re-mapping my existing ECU or having a new Apexi?
I have a 99 UK Spec and was advised that the existing ECU can be mapped? Is this correct? And if so, where/how etc?
Or the alternative is to take it to Mocom and have an Apexi - which I understand totally LOL.
Would there be any difference between the two with regard bhp? Which would give more?
I'd really appreciate some feedback on this

Ecutek around £650
Apexi around £800

should be no difference in power.. both a means to an end and both very good..
