ABS kicking in early

One (or more likely several) of you folk is *bound* to be able to answer this...
My ABS seems to come in extremely early, even compared to my previous Impreza (MY01 vs MY00).
This is with standard brakes, so God knows what it will be like with the Hi-Specs going on in a few weeks. 
Someone else with a UK300 mentioned the same thing to me a few days ago, which got me thinking...
Is there a way of adjusting the point at which the ABS activates, or do I just have to either learn to get used to it or turn it off completely and rely on DRF instead?
