Sounds like the old classic rear diff whine.....anywhere over about 30mph, worse with little or no load (overun and steady cruise), tends to get quieter under load?

You could but it has a low success rate as I understand it, it can be fixed apparently (no not had it myself) by resetting the bearing preload and diff backlash, the rear R160's aren't very robust and tend to loose both to well outside normal tolerance by the time they get to high mileage (like some as early as 10k miles!).

Most competent transmission shop should be able to do the backlash and preload in about 2 hours....I know a good guy based in Gillingham who can do it as a sideline, used to work at a certain motorsport prep place in Banbury.
