I have a weird niggle on my sti 3. It is standard apart from exhaust and 4pots.
When I brake and accelerate hard, I can feel a 'clunk' somewhere under the car. Feels like something shifting back and forth with the weight transfer.
All the engine mounts seem ok. Are there any key areas that may cause this sympton?
Thanks in advance
Chris

I have just noticed that the pads in the 4 pot callipers, havn't got the anti-squeal shims on. Would this make the pads move back and forth as I accelerate and brake?

I have a similar kind of "clunk". Was with Andy F yesterday and I think he suggested the propshaft bushes if I remember right. It was definitely bushes of some sort

There's nothing like them. I've tried an mr2 turbo, skyline gts-t, rx7 (fun but too tail happy to really through it into a corner), integra (fast..... for the last 2000rpm
). They do handle superbly well and the brakes are fantastic. But when you floor it in 3rd at 4500rpm, it takes an age to get into v-tec! Not so with the scooby, which goes absolutely mental @3100rpm!

My mechanic seems to think its the diff, but it doesn't happen every time I apply the power, only after I have made a hard stop. And then again when I nail the throttle, but then it won't happen again until I brake hard. So basically, I get one clunk when I accelerate hard and then a clunk when I brake hard. Surely if it was the diff, it would happen everytime I pressed/come off the throttle?

How about the exhaust banging on the rear diff - the noise can travel right down the exhaust and sound like it's coming from the front of the car. Had a similar problem with mine and adjusted the exhaust fittings which cured the problem

checked the exhaust and its not that. I just can't believe its the diff? Wouldn't it clunk everytime I apply power and not just after I brake hard?
my 1995 WRX does this too, not everytime I stop and pull away but quite often and the noise is from the front off side, mine also does it if I break slowly and hit a bump or somthing. I have put it down to drop links or bushes worn as it seems to only happen when the weight transfers from the front to the rear or from the rear to the front and I have heard that they are quite a common thing to go?
my 97 gtb wagon had this problem it was pinion bearing in rear diff it made the deceiving noise that seamed like it was coming from the front half of the car but was just noise traveling up driveshaft, the way the needle bearing sits in the casing doesent always make the knock when u power on/off but more when u stop and load it up when u move forwards again
I had the same problem on a MY99 uk with the SUBARU 4 Pots, turned out to the anti rattle strip had been put in the wrong way round!!!
So if there are no strips on your car it could be the pads moving around in the calipers
