I'm trying to help a friend refurbish a Winnebago motorhome.

Can a 220v power inverter be used to power a 110v transformer (you know, those yellow box thingy's that convert 240v to 110v)
All the main electrical items, generator, air conditioner etc are 110v. The television and microwave are 240v My friend wants to get a 220v power inverter and use one output for the 240v stuff and the other output to run through the transformer.
Pure sine wave inverter, or modified sine wave?
My guess is that a modified sine wave inverter would probably work but would cause a lot of noise (hum). I reckon a pure sine wave inverter shouldn't cause any problems, but I'm not an electrician so I don't really know.
Can anybody enlighten me?

 

you may need to be a little careful there as mate if your running the inverter from the winny generator as its likely to be 60 hertz . if from an external source ie campsite hookup you;ll need to isolate the supplies for u.s 110 and u.k 240volt . probably better to buy small uk portable generator and rewire the winny socket outlets to uk 3 pin via suitable fuseboard incorparating rcd device and wire up suitable plug for external pickup for campsite or when at home.
large inverters cost a lot of money and cant change the incoming frequency,
most appliances will probably work on 60hertz but expect shorter service life unless they state 60hz on the rating plate . .. please get someone who knows what looking at on the winny generator as quite often u.s supplies are split 55volt to each pin in their socket outlets. madwrx
