There seems to be some differences of opinion about running imprezas in.
My dealer advised me to forget steady running in and just thrash the thing.
I ran my car in very hard & now it seems to have a performance edge on similar MY00's.
I would like to dyno it but have not been able to.

Comments Please.

I remember someone saying that thrashing the car in its early life would increase performance, but reduce the lifespan of the engine. Can't remember the implications of running the car in hard on the thinner oil though, I'm sure someone will be able to comment.
You might want to do a search on running in, it should be there somewhere.

Cool

Run your car in gently, the oil in there already is designed for running in only (or it should be!!) as for performance differences, you probably wont notice any difference until around 9k as the engine is going to take that long to loosen up, why knock life off your engine???

Thumbs down

I was one of the people who posted words to the effect that thrashing your car during the running in period could ultimately increase the power, but reduce the engine life. This was relayed to me by an AA mechanic of all people.

There was a recent thread on this where our Irish friend Kevin was soundly rebuked by Pete Croney for offering such advice. I seem to remember Pete referring to cars treated like this as being potentially 'oily smokers' but the time they reach 50k.

Personally, I think that anyone who abuses their car during the running-in period either has more money than sense, or has been given advice bordering on the negligent.
