i was wondering if anyone can help with my m reg impoted wrx.
Its had a superchip, full magnex exzaust a dump valve and a k&n filter unit. Its also has a stage 1 head and performance cams done on it however the problem is that when i floor the car it studdars for a few secound no mater what gear i'm in.Ive had a full sevices done several times on the car but still can not solve the problem.also recently i've started hearing a loose tappet in the engine and i've been given conflicting info as one person say's it's not a tappet and its the sound of a normal impreza but other people say it's due to the extra boost preasure which is on the engine?
I live in oxford so no local dealer will touch my car and i've bot no performace workshops near by....any ideas?

The engine of an imported WRX is already operating at the limit of it's ability. Carefully mapping the engine management system, using a speciliast chip will produce more power, and still keep a degree of reliability.

The superchips will have a generic map, which will push the engine closer to it's limits than a bespoke one. Some superchip chips just upped the boost without sorting the fuelling out. This leads to pinking and then to the engine going boom.

I take it your running the car on super unleaded and not normal unleaded?
Also the engine sounds lumpy as its a flat 4 configuration, the superchip is a bad idea, try a link, would be better for it and your engine life, also what year is the car??

PS, i think the stage 1 head and uprated cams are a bit of a waste of money, a decent chip and uprated internals would have been better to buy, or a bigger turbo you shouldnt really notice any difference with uprated cams, its a turbo and there are other things you should consider first!

C'mon chuck, i dont think its THAT serious id say its going to be low grade fuel rather than anything else, saying that, i suppose that can be pretty serious given enough time!

Jap imports are mapped to run on 100 ron fuel, Unleaded is only 95 ron. If you run on 95r you risk a high chance of the engine letting go. Really you should be running on Super Unleaded + Octane booster, taking you to 99 +/- 1 ron point. Optimax is available in most of the country but seems to have received mixed reports.

The Link is a fully mappable ECU available from Bob Rawle Developments. This allows you to map the ecu to your car and your specifications. eg you can have it set to run more power up top etc.

A few people on this site have mentioned that the boxer engine can sound a bit tappety, but so did my old Cav GSI.

Check out the SIDC FAQ which has loads of usefull information.

Sith said it all
What your hearing is det in the cylinders, not good, what this does is basically blows your pistons to peices cos your timings out for your ignition
How long have you been running on UL??
I suggest that if its been a few thousand miles you seriously get your car checked over by a speciallist as Sith said, your engine will let go and just go BOOOOOOOOOOOM
If you push your car hard all the time then you probably have more damage than you think and the only real solution is to replace all 4 pistons, then run your car on super unleaded only after that (shell optimax is 98.6 ron where as sul is 97ron)
If you have a 94 model wrx your car will probably be underperforming by quite alot even now your engine wont be pushing its standard 240bhp (there not all 276bhp u know ) i take it your car redlines at 7k??
My only suggestion for who to take it to is scooby sport and see what they can do (down south somewhere, just check out www.scoobysport.co.uk) and hope that the damage aint too bad

I *think* you have to use a bottle per full tank. There are places where you can buy crates of the stuff. http://www.scoobysport.co.uk I think does this.

1 bottle for every 50ltrs so its enough just the optimax should be enough but if you do any hard driving ie track days then its reccommended to use it
Your also advised to do an ecu reset, basically take the battery terminal off and leave it for around 20-30mins so it can adapt to the new fuel quicker otherwise it can take quite a while
