I wouldn't bet on it being plated unless it was from a DCCD equiped car. It will normally be a suretrac type diff.

Bringing back an old thread, cause I want to change my rear diff oil tomorrow.

David, or anyone else that might know, does the Suretrac rear diff call for normal GL5 gear oil? I believe the plated type like in DCCD cars and newer models uses a 90 LSD type gear oil (like Subaru's LSD oil 90LS, part no. K0305Y0900). However, I have a JDM 2001 Subaru Impreza STi, no DCCD, so I am assuming it has the Suretrac. I can tell you that both rear wheels turn in the same direction when the car is jacked up (all wheels off the ground).

If it is a Suretrac rear diff, would a straight GL5 90 oil be better than a GL5 75-90 oil?

Thanks for any help.

Dennis

David,

Thanks for the answer. 75W 90 Synthetic is what I'll use.
