Our house is situated next to a strip of grass about 50 yards across to the next house with a public footpath through the middle.
A house a couple of streets away, in a similar position to ours, has moved their boundry fence out about 8-10 feet. They have, I assume, bought this land off of the local council?

Have been looking recently into buying a caravan, and a strip of land next to our house would come in very handy .

Anyone done anything similar on here? is it as straight forward as giving the council a ring and putting in an offer?

They are more likely to have stolen the land. If your boundary goes unchallenged for a certain number of years (7?) then you get to keep it.....

 

just be mindful of nosey/bitter/twisted neighbours.... thats how councils usually find out about these things!

Yeah but the land they have taken runs the whole length of their garden, stuck a big new fence up too .
The council regularily mow the green, just thought if I bought some of it, it would save them a job and my taxes would come down

Maybe if I move the fence out say, a couple of inches a week, no-one would notice

no silly, more land = higher valued house = more council tax

 

Not thinking of shopping the other people Pete, certainly not if I want to do the same . The trouble being, I thought, that with the council tending it it would be rather noticable

I think the council have special rules for the setting up of pikey encampments.

i think the rules for adverse possession are different with adopted highways land. check the local authority highways records to see where the edge of the adopted highway is before moving your fence!

 

I would ring the council, I work in property & land and have acted for several people over the years who have bought property off the council for extra garden.

Unless they have a future use in mind you might be surprised at how easy they will let you have it.

It can take time though as it will have to be voted through the council at all different levels.

Cheers guys, sent an email to the council last night and received a reply with details of who I have to write to, to see if it can be bought

 

my sister has just bought a bit of unused land about the size of a house+garden. It was just grass/ weeds but next to her house so she wanted it to build a garage/ drive on.
She paid £2k but the condition is she can't build on it? not sure if that includes a garage or means a house?
