Default my00 turbo upgrade

ive been offered a second hand vf28 turbo off a type R and want to know if this is a good upgrade to my standard td04.
the car is a my00 uk turbo currently running 270bhp and 270lbft with ppp, full decat and panel filter.
what is a safe power limit for a uk turbo im not after big power just something safe and what else would i need to have if i fitted this turbo

I have one of these fitted to my MY00 with a remapped ecu and a HKS Hiper 3" exhayst. Runs 12.8 quarter mile and 0-60 in 4.3 sec. As to the Hp I am not sure but these figures are 1.2 sec faster than stock in the quarter mile on my car. Hope this helps.

I'm running a VF28 on a UK MY00.
Was running 270BHP (ish) on the TEK2 ECU and TD04.
VF28 with TEK3 remap gave me 309-321BHP depending on ambient temps.

309bhp & 296lbft
321bhp & 312lbft (with intercooler cooled with mug of water)

On the Tek2 map running the VF28 it was giving 296bhp/274lbft at 1.2bar and still running safe according to the mappers. But I had it tweaked to 1.3bar anyway and got another 20BHP and about 30lb/ft of torque.

Now running an Apexi Power-FC at 1.35bar, but not sure of output yet.

Pretty much.
320BHP is OK, but 320lbft is getting close on the gearbox. Just treat it with care and don't bang it up and down the gears like a mad-man.

Your also running at the limit of the Injectors,Top mount Intercooler and turbo (at 1.35 bar).

Cheap enough to get to this figure, but from then on it starts getting expensive.

Decat, STI JDM Panel Filter, VF28, Remapped ECU...... that's it....
Headers are still on the garage floor waiting to be ported.

Wink

Standard TMIC K&N intake as well as the other mods. I would estimate around 300hp. My car is faster than a stock JDM STI 6 at the drag and from what people say with the upgrades I have this is probably an accurate figure.

I am also running 17 to 18 lbs of boost in fourth and fith gear wot through the help of a turboxs highperformance boost controller. Check out their site at turboxs.com. Running 95 RON from the pumps with no knock indicated on my knocklink sensor

Standard TMIC (at the moment), STI 8 Cooler to go on soon once I get time
PE done the mapping.

As mentioned above they ran it up on the rollers on the VF28 with the TEK2 ECU which was mapped for the TD04 when I arrived.
It gave 296BHP with 1.2bar from the VF28.
Before I went there, I had to mess around with the restrictor size in order to stabilise boost on this map, as the VF28 restrictor is alot smaller so boost was initially too high.

They then mapped it in a couple of hours to 310BHP (ish) for around £250 (as the ECU was already TEK liscensed).

My target was 300BHP, so I was happy with what I got.

What gains would you achieve on the 309/296 by porting oe headers and up pipe? Why i ask, we have near the same set up apart i have a tek3.

Probably a bit more torque and quicker spool.
But spool would also depend if you used the correct filtered banjo bolt on the turbo oil feed.
It has a much smaller hole due to the VF being roller bearing.
If you use the TD04 banjo bolt there is too much oil supplied to the VF and hence slows it down.

so is it safe to just bolt the vf28 and run it with my ppp ecu as long as i control the boost? if so what would be a safe boost level?

I wouldn't run it with a PPP as it's leaner then a standard ECU.
You would be safer to run it with an Ae802 which is the richest ECU of the crop.
Wouldn't want to do this without a reliable knocklink and maybe evena checkup using detcans and a wideband AFR.

Putting the VF28 on in place of the TD04 will be a good upgrade but I would not do it if you cannot map your car afterwards. Without a remap you will not get the full benefit of the change at the very least.
