just one question tat was lingering in my mind.

Of all the cars that had thrown a big end, be it any of them, not just No.3. How many of them had had link ecus mapped by Bob Rawle or any other competant mapper?

I am racking my brains trying to think of any of these unexplained big end failures that hah had well mapped aftermarket ecus and couldnt come up with any.

 

Didn't we come to the following?

* Sustained high revving, and coming to a halt.
* Recent oil change.
* Bolloxt phatass wannabee wrc looking cars?

this is not about what comclusions were reached. I just want to know how many of the failures had decent maps in them.

I have just re read my post and I am now worried that this looks like it could be a dig at Bob Rawle. This is absolutley not ther case.

What I am trying to figure out is if any cars with a decent non standard map had lost a big end. The only non standard map that I reckoned would be decent is a map done by Bob, which is why I mentioned his name.

I was trying to figure out if there could eb a spurious feature of the jecs map which might have led to a failure. This potentially being eradicated by removing the jecs.

I was wondering if there might have been a correlation that no one saw.

I know conclusions have already been drawn, but that does not mean the debate should ever be closed.

This subject has been covered many times, the truth is, other than the engine having a known tendancy to eat big ends no2 included after a prolonged period of high revs and load the reasons why are pure guess work, just to add to the confusion and perhaps rationalise the issue with respect to non standard maps etc a load of non turbo cars have experienced this same failure.Pinking or Deting will cause damage, but if you regularily push your car hard high into the rev band for long enough I suspect the result is almost inevitable i.e. big end failure.

 

Mine was one in the "Just Had Oil Change" Category. (Unmodified WRX STI Ver5 TypeR Ltd at about 70mph started grinding into its grave 20mins after it had been serviced.)

My warranty company said on the phone that it has had so many big end failures that it is excluding them from cover. I would be interested if an engine designer could analyse some of the failures and comment on why this engine suffers from the problem.
