Default Transmission problem???

96 wrx sti

5 speed short thingy shift.

Problem... when driving or coasting in neutral I can hear a click click click sound - when I brake the sound disappears. I hear an initial clonk when applying the brakes but they brake fine and stop as they should do.

If I reverse and then drive forward again the click click click goes for a very short time then starts up again.

When I'm out of gear, in neutral, sitting in the drive and apply the brakes there is no clonk.

Can someone make anything of this? Sorry for all the clicking and clonking

Edit: I thought it might have been my brake calipers but I jacked her up and the wheel moved as freely as I could manage to turn it without any clicking

Where do you think the clicking sound is coming from Karen? is it coming from the front wheel area?

Could be a wheel bearing? do you notice the clicking worse when you turn the steering wheel?

I can also hear a bit of a continual squeak (in addition to my clicks and clunks!) so it might well be the bearings!

Oh god... are these expensive?

How are the brake pads? reason i ask is because i had a similar thing with my STi and it turned out that the brake pads were so low it squeaked continuously and to top it all i had a bit of grit lodged between pad and disc,so it might not be as bad as a wheel bearing.Wheel bearings tend to drone a lot in a straight line but quieten down or even disappear whilst turning. One other thing i can think of off the top of my head is a CV joint might be worth getting it up on ramps and having a nosey.Im sure the boys at Triton can diagnose it for you

Karen, fear not, wheel bearings aren't something i would do on anyone elses car anyway...... and i'm pretty sure that the pads that are on the car haven't got wear indicators, so it can't be them clicking......

Mini meet Friday eve, if not sorted by then i'll have a drive and see what i think!!

Cheers lads.. I've got almost brand new pads on so they've not worn I thought it might have been the pistons in the calipers sticking causing the pads to rub but I'm pretty sure it's something else to be honest

I've read about the CV joint on another forum but I don't know their outcome as they never came back to say what their clicking noise was LOL

You need to decide that it is the joints before getting your hands mucky
Have you tried driving slowly on full lock both ways. CV joints make a horrid noise if knackered.

Sure it's not pink(ing) you can hear

Triton officially diagnosed that the wheel bearing has gone so it's being replaced next week

I assume it's safe to continue driving her til she's undergone surgery?
