importing engine from america
hi need some advice ive bought a sti engine from america , been waiting for it to arrive , been in touch with the guy who i bought it from .and he says its being held at customs , he did put it down as a gift , any one know were i go from here thanks kirby32
He may well have marked it as a gift, but anything over ( IIRC ) £18 value is liable for import duties and VAT regardless of it its a gift or not.
The fact he marked something as a gift which obviously isnt means he ( and possibly you if you asked him to, and he has emails to prove etc.. ) have just comitted a crime against HMCE.
If I were you I'd get your ring greased up now and expect a visit from the men with rubber gloves.
Worst case scenario though is probably that they'll just confiscate the engine and you'll lose all the money you paid. Best case is they'll give you a warning and release the engine once you have paid all the duties owing.
Customs are getting pretty hot on people importing goods from the USA and trying to avoid the taxes ( although importing a crate that weighs a few hundred kg being declared as a gift is pretty stupid ! )
