Default Import ECU and 95 ron

I've just been to view a 2003 JDM Forester XT. It's a private sale and the car was originally purchased from a well known importer. During the conversation it became apparent that the car was driven in a 'spirited' manner (no problem with this) but they were using 95 ron unleaded. I expressed my concern and the seller said according to the importer there was no problem. They have just rung the importer who has assured them that 'apart from a minimal loss in performance there is absolutely no problem with 95 and the ECU can easily deal with it.
I don't agree with this but this is based on knowledge of the ECU's in our cars and these are a couple of years older ie: 2001. Anyone out there care to comment.

Thanks Obi

It's a private sale so there's no warrenty involved. I was surprised at this advice, because on one hand using 95 is going to result in more than a minimal loss of power thus negating part of the reason for buying a JDM model; and is a JDM ecu going to be able to retard sufficiently to ensure no detonation?
