Default Cleaning Air Filter - Oil??

Hi, I've done a search on here and found that you can clean the filter in soapy water but that you have to oil it.

What oil do I need? And is it really needed?

Also, because it's particularly dirty it's running a bit rich. Should I reset the ECU when it's clean?

Thanks,
Mark.

What type is it?
If its a K&N or Green cotton air filter then dedicated cleaning kits can be bought, these containing solvent to remove/clean the element and proper oil to recoat them.

If its a standard paper filter, chuck it away.

As Richie says,
The std filter aint worth cleaning out
If it is K&N etc the cleaning kits are only £9.99

Can't remember what make it is but it is green and kinda spongy.

Where can I get a cleaning kit from? Halfords?

I don't think you can do much with the green sponge filter other than wash it in soapy water and it is not the type that you re-oil if it is similar to the green sponge I have come across in the past.
