Difference between STI V5/6 gearbox and european WRX MY99/00 and UK
Hello!
I would need some information form the experts about the gearboxes of the european and UK spec WRX´s and the difference between STI V5/6 gearboxes.
Are the WRX V-limited (300bhp) and STI gearboxes really harder and longlasting than an normal WRX gearbox?
What´s the difference not only the shorter gearthrow, that doesn´t really matter but regarding the power it can stand!
How much PS/torque /NM) will it handle?
Some people say that the WRX has the same gearbox and gearsets inside as the STI V5/6 (I do not talk of the Type R or the RA Versions!)
Can anyone tell me more about the 300bhp WRX 1999 V-limited gearbox and car?!
Questions over questions, and I hope you can help me!
Many thanks in advance for your postings!

Hello!
Thank´s for the table, but that´s only regarding the gear ratios and I wonder about the longlasting and power an STI V5/6 gearbox can handle...
Are they really stronger than the normal WRX´s`!
Many thanks!

Sti's supposedly have a stronger casing, meaning less flex and less likelyhood of a failure. I've never side by side photos showing this though.
Note that fitting an STi box to a Euro car will require a swap of rear diff ratio (the table that Morpheus sent you probably details this).

From: Over 500ft/lbs of torque @ just 1.1bar
The UK casing is good (assuming you mean V5 and newer). Some say the gearsets are stronger in the STi. There are some people running quite high outputs on the STi boxes but they must be driven reasonably sensibly I would assume.
I asked the same question regarding the strength of UK vs STi gearsets and I was not convinced that the STi gearsets would last on MY99 with a TD05-16g@1.5bar if driven hard. I opted for uprated gearsets in the end.
How much power you running?

Thanks, so it seems that there is no difference between the WRX gearbox and the ones of a WRX V-limited or STI...
I might have around 280bhp and a VF28 1,3bar boost.
But looking for uprated clutch to compete in quartermileracing...

The type R box also has a steel shifter fork instead of alumnium for 3-4 gears.

You are talking of the Type R box, is this the same as the WRX V-limited box?!
There should have been a 1999 WRX turbo reg V-limited UK spec Impreza with 300bhp and I wonder what this gearbox is like!
If it´s like the Type R gearbox it would be fine, but I couldn´t find anything in the www!

Could anyone tell me more about the STI V5 Type RA gearbox?
I think it might be much shorter and cruising on highway with 140km/h will be with around 4000 revs, that´s quite much don´t you think?
Now with the WRX gearbox it´s fine with 3.400 revs.
The difference is WRX 5th gear with an ratio of 0,738 and STI TYpe RA in 5th 0,825, that doesn´t seem to be much difference, but when I took a look on the excel-sheet Morpheus sent me, I was "shocked".
There is about 3500revs in 5th 84,9mph/136km/h with the stock WRX gearbox and only 75,9mph/121km/h on the STI Type RA gearbox!
I think, I might be happier with the Type R gearbox, but what ratios does this have, not mentioned in the excel-sheet!
Thanks for your answers!
