5th gear crunch

Default 5th gear crunch

when I change into 5th at medium to high revs there is a crunch with the gears as it gos in,if i let the revs drop as i change gear it gos in allright,basically if i change into 5th above 70mph there is a crunch. I have spoken to my local main dealer in essex and myl ocal scooby specialist and they say i need a new 5th gear and all the relevant bits and have both quoted 500£ parts and 500£ labour.Should I just bite the bullet and get it done or is it something easier to fix which can be done in the garage on a pair of car ramps.can anyone reccomend some places to take the car to in the essex area,its aturbo2000 wagon and its only done 47000

Its a known issue with most of the MY99/00 uk's. Had mine done at 35000 all done under warranty. Maybe you could haggle a bit on price as Subaru know about the fault and never did any recall???

You could get a complete 2nd hand gearbox fitted for less than that. It could just be the synchro rings being a bit worn, though it's hard to tell for certain until the box is out of the car and stripped down.

I'd get a 2nd opinion from a nearby independant specialist or gearbox place before authorising the repair.

If they know what they're doing, then there's no way the labour at least should be that much, they do NOT need to remove the gearbox, and anyway, it's more than likely the synchro on fifth thats going, mine did exactly the same, this can also be fixed IN THE CAR!!!

Ron, how can you replace a syncro on the Impreza gearbox without removing it from the car? You have to spilt the box to get at the syncro hubs...however you can re-torque the infamous nut without splitting the box in half, access is provided to that by removing the transfer box

You can do fifth and reverse synchros while you have access to the infamous nut.....in this pic, whilst the synchros are kind of behind the nut...so to speak...

I cant seem to find anyone who will leave the gearbox inthe car and check this bloody nut which may need tightening,I would rather try this option fo a couple of hundred quid before I part with a grand.

[QUO TE=RON]Will extreme not do it??[/QUOTE]they quoted a grand to sort it,theyhad a drive in it last week when i had a minor service done and didnt find the problem as it only happens at high revs and they dont "thrash customers cars "quote unquote, i think they just take the gear box off and send it to API to be fixed. i spoke to API and they had 4boxe s from xtreme this week to be looked at, they said there is no quick fix and quoted 750 plus vat

Had mine fixed by Teg sport... excellent service, alittle far away from me, but had a mate at a local garage remove and refit the gearbox for £200 quid, then took the gearbox up to Teg sport for fixing, which included 5th gear, reverse, syncro and front diff... labour and parts all in £300 quid... the gearbox is now spot on... couldn't recommend them enough, quality service, gearbox was done and back in within 2 days...
You could just double de-clutch in 5th... it'll stop the crunch, then just wait for it to get worse or go completley...

spoke to len yesterday and he said it was about 400
£ to tighten this this infamous nut and 850 toput a new 5th gear in which is a stregthened version which subaru do due to this being a common problem on 99and 2000 classics a lot of which were changed by subaru under warranty.Len did not reccomend tightening the nut alone due to it being a temporary fix only.So it looks like im going to have to bite the bullet and get it sorted properly.

I've just had a quote from a local garage to have the nut alone tightened to see if that works and he quoted £100+vat!!!.

He knows he stuff and drives a Skyline as his own car, which he is modding slowly between me taking up his time in the workshop, he's recently done some other little bits and bobs and does provide a vgood service so far.

I've shown him the pic of infamous nut and the process that as been explained and he knows all about it. Think I may have found a little gem.

I'm booking it in to be done soon as. I'll let all know how it goes. I'm in cambridgeshire if anyone needs his name and number pm me.
