Stuck in first gear with no neutral!!
I have an intermittent problem which today has resulted in the utilisation of a Green Flag low loader! My gear box occassionally "gets stuck in first gear" after trying to select reverse! The story so far:
- Car: 1998 WRX STi JDM Wagon
- Nasty whine from gearbox which was solved by removal of gearbox, replacement of viscous coupling (centre diff), new bearings, re-shimmed etc and refitting of gearbox.
- On about 6 occasions in total, when trying to select reverse, it doesn't engage properly & when you put it back in neutral it's actually in first gear (I know this because I can move the car forwards). Trying to select any other gear and letting the clutch out doesn't move the car but revs reduce as if some load is being put on the clutch or whatever (I'm no mechanic, sorry!). When the gearbox is in this state, third, fourth, fifth & reverse positions are still the same (i.e. you can move the gearstick to these positions). However, the only way to move the gearstick "into" first, is to go into third & then across!!!
- When "stuck in first", I've managed to get it back into neutral by "stirring" the gearstick around or putting it into "neutral" with the handbrake on & "rocking" the car forwards which seemed to "pop something back into place" & hey presto, things were back as they should be!!
So what on earth is going on????!!! Any thoughts/comments/sympathy/similar stories/offer of free help(!) would be greatly appreciated :-)
Thanks.

Mine is stuck in 5th at the minute and just wont come out. A friend of mine thinks it could be the selector arm (something like that) thats bent so thats why is wont come out. Its getting opened up tomorrow so i will know better by then
