Default BIG END

Ijust been to have my ra decated sweet as a nut, got home and heard a rattleing phoned scoobyclinic up asked wot i could be THE ******* BIG END GONE, can anyone tell me wot causes it to go.

maybe so its just what ive heard, i dont actually know, ive heard most big end failures occur when doin top end runs

the 'big ends' are simply oil pressure fed bearing joining the crankshaft to the connecting rods. 'big ends gone' is when the bearing is worn giving the con rod an amount of play at the crank end. you will hear it as a deep knocking noise usually at low revs. what causes the bearing to wear is either dirt getting into the oil and blocking the holes or lack of oil pressure. it can happen at any revs at any time at any point in the engines life.

high speed runs create low pressure over the bonnet so the scoop doesn't get air, so the intercooler doesn't cool and you get det. this apparently sends shocks through the conrods and breaks down the oil film in the bearings.

Big end bearing failure is usually caused by detonation. It has nothing to do with the engine being fragile, however: if youd said that the main bearings had run then that might be a different matter... The EJ20 has, as most horizontally opposed engines do, very narrow main bearing surfaces.

Thanks for the advice we have decided to take it to clinic and have 2.5 convertion for the money it would take to build it back up its cheaper to have that done.CHEERS LADS.

We had a big end go in our 02 WRX. It was a 12,000 mile engine which had just been serviced so it was brand new oil. It suddenly let go for no apparant reason, so it seems just to be very unlucky if you have a big end failiure. We were under warranty so the dealer just fitted a new engine, but it could be very expensive.

Mine went pop a couple of weeks ago....always serviced on time and I don't think I drove it too hard. It is true they do fail from time to time even when you don't abuse them.

Nothing wrong with the engine, its usually down to either fuel or not monitoring the modifications you have done to the car.
Decatting can cause problems on JDM cars, it normally increases the boost slightly, so if you were running "borderline" fuel it will push it beyond that.
Now for the questions

1. What fuel are you running?
2. Do you have a knocklink fitted?

optimax +boost add no knocklink. But drove home after de-cat at under 60 mph, surley not even into boost.I think just a tierd engine.
