Default how many times do you go into th red?

i was wondering how many times people go into the red on the rev limiter?

what sort of damage can this do?

is it right that when you go past about 4500 revs its past its best so your actually loosing power?

cheers

I hit the rev limiter regularly in every car I own. It's there to stop damage occuring.

Driving along in 2nd on the limiter might not be the best thing you can do though

yup, I use it briefly but often. It's a bit noisy to cruise along in "the red" on motorways though...

I rarely go into the red,Theres really no need,I think 4500rpm is very low though. My car makes its max power around 6200rpm i normally top out around 6500 then change gear which brings the revs down to around where i have the max torque.

I dont always drive it like this only when giving it some.

I've only been in the red twice - each time when i've selected 2nd instead of 4th.

Thats a good way to by pass the limiter and break your engine!

going into the red isnt great for ur engine, just causes that little bit more wear. theres also no point as ur peak torque and power will be about 1000rpm below ur rev limiter, so in theory u are loosing time/power

.....well you could also say going above 4000 rpm causes further wear.

Once so far in my Octavia vRS - during a spirited overtaking manoeuvre

Years ago my (original model) 323i - occasionally on the rev limiter in top (4th).

And even earlier in my modded Vitesse 2-litre excursions well into the red were a regular event - 7000rpm in 1st was about 60 No rev limiter - just valve bounce and mechanical sympathy

Nah, most scoobies develop there peak power between 5.5 and 6.5 k mate! Nothing wrong with taking it up to 6.5 (assuming you've got a non-sti) and then change into the next gear so you fall right into the powerband once again. It's not worth going any higher really cause the power tails off and all you'll get it more noise and increased engine wear

i avoid taking my car into the red. ive done it twice and only because i missed a gear. i usually take it to 6.500 i think redline is 7.000 allways 500 rpm below. my axgt though it used to go through redline quite often. it ended up spiting oil out ov every where so thats why i dont do it in the scoob 93 wrx import.

i dont ever.....purely because i cant i had my rev limiter set at 6800 on my tek3 map as a bit of an extra safety margin due to running much higher boost on a uk engine. As many people have said, at this engine speed your peak power has already been and gone and if you change gear just befor eit then it drops you back in to peak torque....

The funny noise was probably where you just caught the rev limiter

Took the Scoob into the red a couple of times not long after I got it cos I was used to being able to drive up till 9500rpm in the RX8, it was great as it just kept pulling an pulling, almost had a liniar power band, the best bit was above 6500rpm in that, when booting it always took it into the red
Saying that I have alway been more warey about taking conventional pitoned engines into the red, usually change about 6500 or 7k in the scoob
