ive got a solid pipe on my 03, so it doesnt "need" to be flexi, personal preference i guess. Mines from H&S.

There you go, I suppose it's down to personal experience's. I know a few people who have fitted solid pipes and had problems with leaking gaskets that were solved by fitting flexi, hence my choice to go flexi..

I've heard downsides from not fitting flexi, but I've also heard of failures in flexi joints. I believe it is true that some of the early non-flexi ones (I think including one or two from very reputable companies, but not 100% certain) didn't have a sufficiently flat/properly aligned flange, with no flex there was no way to "take up" the error, so these had leaks. The newer non-flexi ones seem fine - I've done 40k miles on mine with no problems (scoobysport Janspeed version). It may be that certain manufacturer's pipes still have dodgy flanges, in which case, they'll have problems.

AFAIK the most clever/complicated up-pipe - which doesn't necessarily make it any better - is the APS one.

Slip joints overcome the worry of failure of the flexi mesh.

Thanks alot guys.

Much appreciate.

Have been looking at HKS non-flexi and Helix flexi.

How do u guys rate these?

Oh, is it true that if your r not running massive horses, u dont need headers?
I am currently on tek3 with hks muffler from turbo back decatted and somewhere about 275bhp. on UK wrx02.

i suppose its true, because in order to maximise engine power then you would. but if your not botheres with strangling every last bhp out of it then no....i havent yet, and my 03 wrx is sitting at around 305-310.

apparently having std. headers ported ~£100 exchange, gives good results with TD04.

i have recently fitted solid up pipe on my 02 wrx, no problem with sealing of flanges but did have few problems getting it all aligned, so would recommend flexi as this would help in fitment and stress factors, also a question for the ones with new age scoobies, i am now having problems with check engine light coming on, with fault code of p0546 exhaust gas recirculation temperature EGRT sensor bank 1 signal too high, i guess i need another different CEL fix, where can i get one from and how much or even better what is the value of the resistors needed

Mikes WRX

I made 325 BHP with a TD05 turbo on a set of "harvey's" ported (exchange) standard headers on my Bugeye MY 02 I paid a bit extra for wrapping which was a work of art and must have taken ages Class

Have a look on Andy Forrest's web page about his project 03 WRX. He told me about the headers (after a lot of testing) but I can't remember who he said did them. It didn't include fitting.

Ah, how did you go about 'butchering' it..?

I thought about doing it, probably just need to cut the side panels and 'squash' down a little. I suppose you just need the seal along the top to be snug against scoop..?

I supplied Andy with the O/E ported headers that were tested against various tubular on the 03 WRX. I think the results are on his site or to be published in Scooby Mag but there was improved spool where as tubular headers added lag and the power output was to within 5 bhp of the best tubular headers which did not last long in service.
That is my understanding and no doubt Andy can clarify.
