I suspect that my loss of power under hard throttle may be due to a failed or badly connected 3 port solenoid. Once I have sorted out the wiring and cleaned out the pipes, I'd like to be able to tell whether the unit is working properly. Anyone know how to go about this?

 

connect the test mode connectors and turn on the ignition, the solenoid will get operated in turn as will the fans, you will be able to hear it clicking if its operating ok, take the opertunity to blast some brake cleaner through it when it is being operated to get rid of any oil residue.

Sorry Bob you lost me on that bit (rather new to this scooby lark I'm afraid). Thanks for the advice though.

Edited to say: Having got my early morning brain in gear and done a search I assume this is the two green connectors under the steering column. Thanks again, will give it a go.

 

Cleaned though all the hoses with compressed air, cleaned the solenoid with brake fluid in test mode and replaced the joke wiring that I suspect was shorting at critical moments.

It seems to have done the trick, though it's a little hard to tell during schools rush hour without being a total hooligan.

I followed your instructions but cannot hear the solenoid clicking. I have a bug eye wrx, should I be able to hear it? I know the car was in test mode as the rad fans cycle on and off but coudn't hear any clicking. I also measured 24v at the connectors to the solenoid so know it is getting power. Is me solenoid a goner?
