Sorry to keep going on and on about engine failures but....
Been searching through 22b threads and 22bs for sale(here and Autotrader) and its difficult to find one that has'nt had a rebuild. Some are on their third engine.
Are 22bs even more likley to have a big end failure than a STi5/6

is that a bad thing? aslong as the rebuild is by reputable engine builder there should be no problem, if anything could be a bonus, with better internals???

Mike, I'm just wondering WHY so many 22bs have had rebuilds. One has to pay over the odds for the exclusivity of a 22b(>£22k) it would be a real kick in the 8llx to get a rebuild bill of £5K+

 

Deep, the main problem with 22b's are with people ragging them on UK fuel when they've not been mapped for it just like any JDM import really, just with a slightly more expensive block

 

Thats what I'd like to believe Tim but is it really true? Guys on here ie Old Fart, Adam M, have had failures and I c'ant see them abusing their cars

 

Knowing both of them fairly well (and just happening to be on the phone with Adam seconds after his engine failed) I would certainly agree that they didn't abuse their cars...but, neither did they own them from new Chuck was only saying on 22b the other day that his car was just coming up for it's 90k service...not bad really

the 1st thing i did when i got the car was buy a gems ecu and remap now mapped for optimax and optimax+boost

ive not blow the engine but ive got all the paper work for the rebuilds

Yeah it's worrying really, like you say if you're going to do that sort of cash on a car you don't really want to be listing engines as consumables

I quite fancy an sti type R, but for the same reason I'm very cautious. It feels even more worrying when you've owned an Evo (engine nice and reliable at 350bhp)

 

Exactly. I'd much rather have a 22b( or a Type R ) than an Evo, but the Evo's engine seems bullet proof

 

On looks I prefer a 3 door Impreza to an Evo, the Impreza has more character (but I'm undecided on what character in a car is?, probably faults when you think about it lol). I can understand people saying evo's handle better but the impreza is more chuckable and feels better in the bends to me (especially if the road is bumpy)

As I say I'd quite like a Type R but part of me knows I'd want the sort of power I had in my evo and it's just not feasible (without spending thousands and waiting for the bang). I could almost stomach around 300bhp but even then they don't seem like they last long. I suppose at least you can put it more in RWD and gain some performance feeling?

What I'd like is the 3 door type R's look (in sonic blue with 18" p1 wheels and lower Ver III spoiler) the evo's engine and front mount (but with the impreza soundtrack), type R handling and Evo's gearbox

 

I know what you mean. Type R in blue( or black) looks the mutts.
Have you driven a Type R, because the short gearing and high rev makes it feel faster.
I had a Type R v4 with Link+exhaust and it felt very rapid. Never owned a 350bhp Evo though to compare!
Are Skyline engines reliable?

 

mines on the frist engine and done 30k now second simon needs to have the ecu mappedfor uk fuel and lotsof tlc with warm up and down

Mine was re-built last year after the bottom end went. API did a great job with the re-build as did AndyF mapping the Apexi PFC. Its now running just a little more than standard but nice and safe, most I get on the knocklink is the first green. Did a round trip of about 560 miles (just under 2 tank fulls) yesterday and it never missed a beat.

As mentioned before I think 22b's need to be re-mapped before you can be sure they will stay in one piece.

hi deep, mines a uk 22b and has done 43000 miles, it's never had an engine rebuild, but even if it did ( subaru warranty would pay for it ) great having the peace of mind. but you r right a lot of them seem to have engine failure, i don't know about the uk ones though.

Aky, yes great peace of mind. Means you can bounce it off the limiter( LOL), but I suppose no mods allowed!

 

shame the pace intercooler is crap.

if you are going to go for a 22B without cutting the front bumper for a fmic, then it has to be a lateral performance core, it just means that unless you are prepared for some serious modding, you have to lose your air con too.

Si, The Pace kit was developed on Adam's 22b...I think he's quite well qualified to comment The LP kit is what the Pace kit should have been to start off with, if they had listened more carefully to the instructions...
