Default 4ltrs of fresh oil in the STi 6speed box, and...

It's way over the full mark on the dipstick!
I remember the original level was halfway between F & L and when drained only around 3 ltrs came out! The stated capacity is 4.1 ltrs. I can accept that some oil will remain in the bearings and tooth gaps, so has anyone else found a similar situation with the 6 speed box?

nope

I have put 4.5 litres in four 6 speeds now, and never apeared over filled.

top tip is, take the drain plug out of the box, then jacke the rear of the car up as high as you can, whilst leaving the front on the floor, and then leave it for at least a half hour to drain.

John did you drain the sump and the diff, there are two places that you need to drain out from, stating the obvious just in case.

Guilty M'lud - thought I could get away with not having to drop the gearbox shield and as the diff plug is at the lowest point in the unit, I thought I could get away with it! Anyway, it's sorted now. As I never used the car I dropped the cover and drained off just over a litre of oil from the sump. It's easy to see how a fair bit of oil would remain in the sump itself.
I used Castrol Driveline (Syntrax) and on a 10 mile journey today the gearchange seems slightly lighter. 4th to 5th used to be a bit notchy with more effort needed than the other gears, but this has improved noticably.
