Default Lightened 6sp flywheel

Anybody got any ideas as to how much weight to take off the standard 6sp flywheel and where to remove the excess weight from?

Is it worth having holes drilled in the flywheel.

Anybody know the rating of the 6 sp clutch cover? Thinking of putting an AP or Alcon etc 6 puck paddle inplace of the standard clutch plate. What do you think it would take, 400bhp ?

Mark, I have no facts, but if the stock 5 speeder is lightened to 8 Kg 'ideal' from, say, 12Kg, ie 30% lightening, then cant the same apply to the (presumably) heavier 6 speed f/wheel?

As to the clutch, I'm told the Lateral sprung centre 6 paddle plate and cover is managable on the road (and the track!).
The 6 speeder takes the 240mm dia clutch so the swept are is much greater than the 5 speeder wheel/clutch @ 225mm dia.

That will have a bearing on the flywheel weight too of course.

Graham.

Mark, The problem with an original 6 speed flywheel is that it is not flat. The clutch face is castellated [ by about an inch ] where the clutch cover bolts on. The centre boss may also be removable - can't remember.

SO, the only opportunity is to take off metal on the reverse side [ nearest the engine ] and there is limited scope for that because of the foregoing. I have been looking at modding my own in my 2004 car and thus far haven't come up with a plan that I like.

If there is a workable plan on an original flywheel out there, I'd like to hear it.

Mark, Just for the hell of it we put a 6 speed flywheel up on the lathe and lightened it a reasonable amount today. Should be finished and into one of my cars soon for a report. We'll weigh it after we've finished to get an idea of saving.

Just a thought, why bother with an STi 7 or 8 flywheel and clutch if you don't have to?? The 6 speeder will fit and run on a normal GC8 flywheel and clutch.

The thought the 6 sp being 10mm wider would be capable of the dealing with increased power & torque.

Very interrested in the lightening techneque

Speak soon Mark

Cheers Paul

I have a standard 6spd Flwheel, clutch & friction plate, but I was thinking of swopping the standard friction platre for an AP sprung paddle.
Wondered what the pressure rating for the standard cover is against the AP cover.

Are you using lightened 6spd flywheel?

Mark,, Sorry, I've been away all day, Wednesday, trying to help a Toyota dealer out of the poo.

The flywheel should be finished by now and for what it's worth l'll photo it and mail it to you. Don't seem to be able to grasp putting pics on here, once you have it maybe you could?

l'll try to give a comparison with standard.

David, best way of putting pics up here is uploading your pic to a website, and then posting the link up.

If you dont want to put pic on API website, create a www.fotopic.co.uk account for free, upload to there and then pic is on your own fotopic site and you can just post link up

Hello

I have lightened many GC8 Flywheels now for some friends and i also made one for me wich was down to 5,4 Kilogramms.
This was all taken from the Engine side and thru drilling holes on the outside of the Flywheel. If i look at the design of the 6Speed Flywheel im not sure if you can take off so much but i will try in aproxx 2 weeks if when my 6 Speeder arives

Mark, after all of our efforts on the flywheel we appear to have only made a 1 Kg difference. It's gone down from @8Kg to @7Kg and taken a couple of hours which isn't really worth the effort.

There is a bit more to come off but I doubt it'll amount to .5 Kg.

Seems like a non starter.

David/Mark:
If you can get a 12% weight saving off the periphery of the wheel then that must add up to a good improvement?
Mark, if you intend to run Avon slicks (hill climb compound) then you may need a bit of mass to unstick them rather than fry the clutch?

Graham.

That's a no then David?

Graham, good thinking. I wondered how before someone would mention that.

Mind you with 450bhp it won't matter

I used to find that a full English breakfast with extra toast and jam helped. Regular bacon butties during the day can be added if still in trouble........
