I should have an Apexi PFC & hand commander in the next couple of weeks. Is the Apexi knock display good enough or should i still purchase a knocklink???
I sold my knocklink too when i put the commander in. I find having the commander in graph mode on just knock far more informative than a knocklink could ever be. As said above you can still see a bit of history and it's so easy to see spikes (det) compared to gradual increase in noise (engine back ground).

Also you could wire up a very bright LED from the CEL in line of sight. You won't miss that. You need FC Datalogit tho to change the point at which the CEl flashes. Standard setting is 60 but i would rather have mine at 30 (early rattly noisy engine).

Ditto. My Knocklink has been rendered useless since the PFC Commander went in. The Commander provides a far more accurate indication of det in my opinion (a visual graph and peak reading rather than "did that orange LED just flash at me?
".
If my KL wasn't custom mounted in the instrument binnacle i'd have sold it ages ago.

Carl... seeing as you have both. At what level do the lights corespond to i.e first green =20, second green 25 etc. I know this will differ from car to car but be intersested anyway.

i binned my knocklink after seeing a couple of orange flashes , and when you looked at the comannder it was virtually flat
plus i was sick of guessing if it was a red flash that i did see
got rid of my knock link ages ago and i see no activity at all
unless i bump the rev limiter
Erm, in complete honesty? The knocklink hasn't worked since Andy mapped the car...
Well, i say it hasn't worked, the power light comes on. I haven't even had a twinkle on startup since the remap though. I think it's up the duff tbh as i have had det indicated on the Commander when accelerating after long periods of idling etc. Been meaning to check its functionality for ages but it's on the same list as all the other jobs right now.
I'd imagine it would differ car-to-car depending on the sensitivity setting on the KL though?

Wish i'd just kept my Knocklink a week longer... i sold it while the PFC was coming from Japan. I had heard a few people say that 30 seemed to trigger the KL oranges and maybe red. I've got in my mind below 30 and it's ok (unless it shows as a small spike on the graph), seems to tally well with det cans too. Mine hits 10-15 @ 4000rpm motorway cruising tho.... so it's generally quite 'noisey'.

If you compare your 'on power' noise level to your trailing throttle noise level at the same rpm you will get a baseline to calculate combustion noise from. I wouldn't expect to see any more than 10 points of a rise due to combustion on a correctly set up ECU.
Some early cars are actually noisier on lift off
which always worries me a bit !

10 points sounds about right..... mine seems to be about 10-15 @ 4krpm while cruising but going throug this area while foot to the floor seems to be no more than about 25 (approx 11.2:1 AFR as shown on the Techedge). Lift off and it's back down into the early teens. Not had the det cans on it for a while (and yes i do look a fool
). Think i'll get them out and give it a run, don't want to do too much as i'm still back on the TD04 (which required quite a map change from the 05) until i sort my turbo.
But i think the conclusion from everybody above is you don't need the knocklink, so keep you cash in your wallet Bats
