I'm going to be taking my MY99 Scooby Turbo to a few 'run-what-you-brung' events this year.

I would like to know what is the best technique to get the perfect start?

I don't want to over rev or not be on full turbo when I hit second gear!

Any tips would be great.

Practice is the key to a good launch in a 4x4 car. I find that holding the revs at about 4500rpm and then getting the car rolling normally before flooring it produces a good launch. I can consistantly get <5sec to 60 launches now. I also find that changing gear without lifting the accelerator will save approx 0.5secs over the quarter - I watch the rev counter like a hawk and change ~200-500rpm before the redline.

 

if you want good times, around 5000rpm on launch and side step. Unfortunately your clutch wont last long doing this but it's great fun I got a 13.8 out of a 99 UK launching this way.

 

sidestepping the clutch at the pod will often result in a lot of wheelspin, even on a 4wd car (especially a uk scood with open front diff and viscous rear).

If you can hold around 4-4500 and lift the clutch swiftly and steadily as you bury the throttle, this is a good place to start. You can help by adding the hand brake, as you can lift the clutch pedal to take out any slack without fear of creeping. Then release hand brake as you launch.
