Default noise from gearbox

Hi guys, I have recently noticed a noise from ,I think, the gearbox. It sounds like the noise you get from interferance on your radio but I know its not this.

The noise dissapears as soon as I get into third and is only noticable in first and second, now I am panicking that I may be due for a new gearbox or syncros.

Please tell me I'm wrong.

Martin

SW, MW, LW or FM?

Gears whine as they get older and worn. Anything with a slight whine to it is probably OK for 'normal' use. Anything staccato, rhythmic or metallic could end up being expensive.

<Kiss of death for my other car>

My AX sounds like a cement mixer on idle (worn release bearing, shaft or similar), a mate has said it sounds like a WW1 biplane (engine, tappets etc) and the gears whine all over but it still goes OK at 120K plus miles and it'll still do > 100mph

Possibly a bearing approaching pensionable age!
Oil level OK? May be worth trying a gearbox oil change.

I did top the oil up not long ago but will check to be sure. I will be due a service soon so I will get it completly changed then.
I'm glad that this sounds like a common fault but if it is the bearings is this fixable or is it a new gearbox time?
