Default Annoying 5th Gear Synchro...

Fast shifts into 5th in my MY03WRX appear to result in the gear being baulked, and a nice 'grind' of the synchos.

By fast shifts, I mean 2nd>5th or 3rd>5th, @ ~7000RPM, usually after ovetaking. 4th>5th during 'normal' driving is generally ok. Is this a 'feature' of the geabox, or is it shagged? The car has only done 15k miles.

Errr, i sort of know what you mean, but i always use the 4th anyway.
Although i defintely know why after overtaking you are doing it, i would not be regularly trying to ram into 5th from like 2nd. I have a modified MY03 at 270 bhp, and still use all the gears. I mean, you gotta be ready for the next overtake aint ya! I wish my car was back at 15k miles, hahaha. (24k currently)
lol.

I've just had the same problem sorted on my car. To check it its the syncro's double clutch when going into 5th and if it's ok theres your answer.

Thanks for your comments. I'll try a double de-clutch from 2nd to 5th on my way home tonight - there's usually someone that needs overtaking :-)

I know that, ideally, I should still shift through the other gears, but there's no real reason that 5th should be baulking in this way just because I was too lazy to momentarily engage 3rd and or 4th. I guess that if I maxed out in 4th and made a shift into 5th, the same thing would happen. The only problem would be that I'd be travelling at ~140MPH!

PlaySatan: how many miles had your car done when you had to get this fixed?

60k. Its a my99 though so its a series 2 box and they're prone to these sort of probs apparantly.

Default just had mine done under warranty at 5000miles

this seems to be quite a problem, used car buyer quote scoobies as the highest for gearbox warranty claims, hopefully just a samll ***** in the armour of scooby ownership
