Not quite sure to be honest. I think they come into play with very high spec turbo engines with mahoosive boost pressures. I'm sure one of the turbo-techi-gurus on here will give you a learned reply in due course.

External Wastegates are used on turbos without an internal wastegate.. Pointless on a car with an internal wastegated exhaust housing IMHO.
