Default Replacing turbo

Whats involved in a straight swap of the TD04 on a MY99? Is this a possible DIY job?

Cheers

its a bit fiddly but a td04 to td04 swap is a doddle

you might as well fit a bigger one tho if your gonna take one off

agrred with Micky,
its a pain in the backside to do all that when for another couple of hundred you could have oodles more power and fit a converted td05.

Drain coolant level to below turbo
remove d/p
undo all bolts
lift out turbo
refit turbo
tighten all bolts
refit downpipe
refill coolant
blimey! from the description there it looks like a half hour job lol

Just swapped a turbo over this weekend. The bolts under the turbo on the downpipe can be a bit trick to get to (I found it easier from underneath). Bolts from turbo to up-pipe are a doddle. Then it's just the oil feed and coolant (flow and return), the oil drain pipe just comes off when you lift the turbo out.

Not a bad job, just make sure you have some quality 14mm spanners and sockets. Start it early in the morning and even if you get a few problems you should be done before the days out.

Tony.

P.s if i were you i'd get new gaskets too.
